Re: MAL files to abandon

I have a question. Google maps shows two sidings off this line. The first is the APT's siding near Ladd Rd in the Walled Lake. The second is a siding to the east of the "yard" in Walled Lake, just west of Welch. What is this siding to? Does this still get any service anymore or is APT really the lon...

Re: HESR map raises some questions

I see one additional problem on the map. If you look going SW from Owosso, it sure seems to show the HESR going a ways to the SW from Owosso. I know part of the line is still in, but I highly doubt it goes as far as the map says it goes. I wonder if someone is pissed off at CN for some reason and do...

Re: What is Conrail?

IIRC the way the Conrail Shared Assets (CSA) areas work is this. Conrail is jointly owned by NS and CSX. Conrail still has its own employees and runs its own trains within the CSA area. The power is supplied to CSA based on a portion of the traffic they get from the CSA area. For example, if 75 perc...

Re: What is Conrail?

When did the government actually get out of the freight railroad business? I don't think it was when they split Conrail up, I think it was way before that. Wasn't Conrail a publically traded company since the mid 1980's? I'm sure the government held some shares of the company for "safekeeping" but t...

Re: GLC gets $17 million loan for locomotives, shop, track

I have a couple comments. First, the posted who mentioned getting the photos of the GP35's while we can is someone with inside knowledge of the GLC, so I would trust he is correct. Second, if they are looking for 5 GP38-2's right now, that means at least a couple of the 35's likely still would be ke...

Re: Durand was just dead, well not exactly.

Speaking of Durand and the Holly sub I saw action today. I was just getting off US23 when I looked down and saw two CN engines heading east at track speed. They had what appeared to be a pretty long mixed freigt in tow. The first portion of the train had a lot of covers hoppers mixed with boxcars, t...

Re: Durand was just dead, well not exactly.

Look at the traffic on the Holly Sub for a second. First, a lot was automotive traffic. Some of that may be lost due to closures of plants compared with 5 or 6 years ago. Second, coal trains tend to run in spurts. It is very possible that they just didn't have any coal trains needed on that particul...

Dream shortline merger

I was sitting here thinking (ok procrastinating) and the thought of what shortlines and regionals would look good mergered into one system. I think the AA/GLC/HESR would be a good railroad that could be viable. I think the railroad could make money interchaging traffic with NS in Toledo bound for th...

Re: Defiance M&W area to get help

I have a couple comments. First, the additional traffic for the M&W would be good for the railroad, if the railroad would be able to support it. Second, in regards to the GT ownership of the DT&I. GTW was an odd railroad back in the 1980's. They were nothing more than a bridge railroad back then bet...

Re: Durand was just dead, well not exactly.

What is the train schedule through Durand compared with the schedule say 5 or 6 years ago? I think the economy has the biggest influence on the issues. I don't think the EJ&E has a significant impact on service on the lines through Michigan. The line through Durand is still the line CN trains from a...

Re: Old CP Alco through B.C. Tuesday...

Could the locomotive have been WCRL lettering? If it was then it is very possible what you saw was WCRL 4202 which was listed as an ex-CP unit of the same number. this can also be confirmed by a picture found online of WCRL taking in Ontario on the 29th of July. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/show...

Did anyone happen to get a number off this mystery locomotive. I can try tracking it down if I have a number to look at, but without a number it might be hard.

Re: Interesting train in Traverse City

Does Rifkin still have a siding in place. If they do, that could be what the plan is sort of. Rifkin may come in and torch these cars. I wonder if you will see the GLC bring some scrap gons in the next time they come into town. Rifkin could scrap on site and load into the cars for the GLC to pull th...

Could they be paying off horsepower hours to CSX? Granted sitting doing nothing doesn't do much for that but, it is another possibility.

Either that or nobody that is supposed to know actually knows they are sitting in the yard.

Re: IORY Southbound at Riga, MI

I think there are two logical reasons. First, the engine died and with only one engine the RR couldn't run the train, so the crew was picked up. They likely would have to wrangle another engine to come pick the train up. Second, the crew ran out of time and had to tie up the train. A third possibili...

Re: GLC Traverse City/Williamsburg District Heads Up!

Problem with the paperwork.

In the description of the property, it lists part of the boundry as the right of way of the C&O. I'm pretty sure C&O doesn't own the ROW anymore.

Re: Police announce enforcement of railroad laws

But I will reserve judgement on the effectiveness of it until I see a decrease in the amount of graffiti on railroad equipment. While trespassing is trespassing, a 'tagger' has to partake in a lot more risky behavior---for a longer period of time---than the occasional pedestrian does. But again, I'...

Re: Police announce enforcement of railroad laws

This would explain why I saw a police car slowly driving along the ROW across from the station on Saturday about 1:30. It went from approximately from the Gandy Dancer to the area near the Argo Dam. I saw this as I was driving along Depot street ad then Main St.

Re: Charlotte and Southern Visitors update thread

So are they going to discontinue the dinner train totally, or are they running it as a special outing only trip for the time being until the economy picks up? I had friends in college that used to work as "entertainers" on the trips at one time early in this decade or very late in the 1990's. Sad to...

Re: New business for the LS&I or CN??

I am no legal expert, but I can't see how this can be filed in Washtenaw County. Based on the lawsuit's grounds I can see only 3 locations it can be filed. First is the location of the mine. Second is the location of the owner of the mine (The only way Washtenaw County could be the source is if the ...
