Re: Great Lakes Central updates July 2020

Lumber business is way down all over :( Nothing to TC in almost a month. My family is building a new home here in TC (previous house burnt down last year) and they are having much trouble buying lumber of all sizes. Menards etc. are out of most of it, I sent him to Northern Lumber and they are only...

And shiney rails, so they came somentimenthis week. I last looked last Saturday. And I flew out Saturday afternoon, arriving back yesterday. so it was this past week. Maybe at night?? Rails to Williamsburg are also shiney. I don't know how shiny a hyrail will do but there was one up here in T.C. la...

Re: Great Lakes Central updates July 2020

I just saw a HyRail pickup approaching T.C. just South of the RR station about 1330. Nothing on board so maybe just an inspection. That looks like fun, I'd like to ride in one someday.

Re: Rails on the Road

Assuming 100 lbs / yard and 39 foot sticks, 50,000 lbs calcs out to 38 sticks per load, 1483 feet of rail. 6 inch base gets 17 sticks per layer with a 102 inch wide trailer, or 2 layers. What did you see Pixl? Guessing from memory as my wife passed the trucks, I would say about 40' length, maybe ju...

Re: Rails on the Road

Another possibility is that the rail wasn't for a railroad at all. In my years of working in the steel erection trade, I've worked a lot of jobs setting and aligning rails on top of rather large girders for overhead cranes to travel on. These cranes can be found inside power houses, steel mills and...

Rails on the Road

I saw two flat bed semi trucks hauling brand new rail north on US-23 in southern Michigan yesterday as I was returning from my Ohio visit. Since when does railroads use trucks to haul their freight, especially rail? I'm curious as to where that rail was headed to.

Aw cmon' TC, don't mess with what little rail we still have here. Somebody might actually pay attention to your words.

Re: Great Lakes Central Updates May 2020

. Later in the day I was in town and saw the Airport Rd. crossing lights stuck on and flashing. Which set on S. Airport got stuck? Whatever the case, it seems like that's been happening a lot lately, and it wouldn't surprise me if that set got modernized soon. The branch that comes up from the outs...

Re: Great Lakes Central Updates May 2020

Nothing seen or heard on the south side of Cadillac as of 1000. Was a load of lumber sitting in Tufford Yard this morning waiting to go to TC. I think they did make it here to TC, today my wife heard the horns blow about a mile away on the Williamsburg branch. Later in the day I was in town and saw...

My wife told me she read on Facebook Grand Traverse 911 that S. Airport Rd. was blocked by a train expected to be 2-3 hrs. and this was supposed to be yesterday (tues). I haven't heard or read myself. Anyone know about this?

Re: Great Lakes Central Updates April 2020

I was wondering as well, after a few weeks ago GLC came to TC late at night a few times, and then now seem to be back to their usual arriving around 11am on the days they come up here. Also, thinking the trackwork here should resume soon... Fine with me as we hardly have any trains here let alone t...

They separated the locos and put one onto the siding that goes to Brittan Media, then pulled the train with the other loco to the parked box cars, then backed the other put of the siding, and spotted the train on the Beacon siding, then picked up the 2and loco again. They had two engineers as they ...

Re: Great Lakes Central Updates April 2020

I was at Amerhart in Williamsburg about 12:15 today. The lumber crew had set out this empty centerbeam on the main for pickup. Guess I was just a little early for the GLC crew.
