1951 New Jersey train wreck
Not sure if this or the History Q&A section is the best for this. My wife came across this excellent YouTube video. They do an excellent job of presenting the timeline and several factors surrounding the crash. The Wreck of the Broker: The Woodbridge Train Disaster of 1951 https://www.youtube.com/wa...

Re: GDLK Operations
What is the control method north of the signal system into Kzoo? Track warrant? Yard limits? Does Grand Elk use Form D’s or another type of track warrant? Not sure what type of warrant. In the Plainwell area at least I believe they use cell phones for the warrants instead of radio. Unless they are ...

Re: E&W to rebuild connection with former GT in Mishawaka
Looks like there's an industrial spur that runs to behind WestRock. I wonder if that is perhaps the target. The route paralleling 331 is labeled as the alternate. Those of you who are far more familiar with the logistics involved may be able to shed some light on this. https://maps.app.goo.gl/fDYk4u...

Re: Shortline Train Location Updates - October 2024
Grand Elk north through Byron Center at 1:28pm. WAMX 4189, 4206, and 16ish cars. It must have spent the night. Otsego box cars still in Plainwell. I didn’t see either power at Hughart Yard Friday afternoon at 4:30pm as I drove south from GR Looked like the boxcars were gone today, although I did no...

Re: Shortline Updates - September 2024
Elk should be NB at this point. About 10:45 they were working Otsego. When we got back home a few minutes ago, no scanner chatter nor EOT telemetry.

Re: Shortline Updates - September 2024
Grand Elk north through Byron Center at 11:01am. WAMX 4206 and 4125 looked both LHF with 30ish cars. Maybe not 4125 but looked like it, so maybe what Andy saw wasn't 4125 in the yard. Looks like Andy was right on the money with his car estimate when they were tied down in Plainwell. The usual run t...

Re: Shortline Updates - September 2024
This morning I thought I heard the train horn but the EOT telemetry was still going long after that. When we took the dogs to the park, the same GDLK engines were still there, but farther forward. The Otsego box cars were on the Otsego branch, and the boxcars that were behind the power had been repl...

Re: Shortline Updates - September 2024
Grand Elk still hanging out in Plainwell. I estimate the train is around 2200' long counting the power. Does anyone have a rough guess as to how many cars that would be?

Re: Hamilton Northwestern Railroad Co.
I thought we could get RR answers here, on the way they operate, locos, stuff like that. I guess not. The owners and employees of the railroads are under no obligation to provide you the information you seek. This is a small, closely-held operation. Maybe they don’t want to share. Maybe they would i...

Re: Shortline Updates - August 2024
GDLK is tied down just south of M-89, pointing north. Looked like 4206 LHF. Not sure which unit was behind it. I guess we'll find out tomorrow if they have an exceeding rare weekend run north, or if they're spending the weekend in the fair city of Plainwell.

Re: GoGo Squeeze purchases old Cherry Growers building
A few years ago I read an article in the TC newspaper about transit. I'm not sure where they are now, but at that time there was consideration of commuter rail as a future solution. Oh god... here we go again    At least he didn't say AA2TC? LOL. Jim- Traffic is a huge problem her...

A few years ago I read an article in the TC newspaper about transit. I'm not sure where they are now, but at that time there was consideration of commuter rail as a future solution. That was a surprise to me that a community with the population of the TC metro area would consider that, then I drove ...

Re: Shortline Updates - August 2024
On my way in to work this morning , the GDLK 4189 ( If I remember correctly) was parked in Plainwell waiting to head north. It looked like there were two more locomotives behind it. I'm wondering if some of the crew lives in or near Plainwell Since the train is parked here so much.
