Re: Shortline Train Location Updates - April 2021

Hmm.. no grand elk Tuesday in Byron Center, none so far today. Did see a large box truck inspecting the rails (similar to Sperry) and a grand elk pickup truck right behind it, heading north around 1pm. Given what you posted recently about slow movements and short trains through your back yard, My s...

They had the Otsego box cars set out when I came through a little after 6:00.

Re: Shortline Train Location Updates - April 2021

GDLK should have been NB from Plainwell about half an hour ago. Heard it but didn't see it.

Re: Shortline Train Location Updates - March 2021

Grand Elk north through Byron Center at 3:23pm. WAMX 4206, WAMX 4124 and 17 cars. One centerbeam in the consist likely for L&W supply on the Hastings branch. Back south at 5:48 with 4124 and 4206 with 15 cars in some good sunlight. Heard the horn miles away with this strong north wind. Must be they...

Grand Elk back south through Byron Center at 7:08 with 4124, 4206, and a massive 91 cars. Last 40 or so were sand hoppers.
Taking their own sweet time coming south. I don't even hear the HOT/EOT devices yet.

GDLK was NB from Plainwell maybe 45ish minutes ago. Didn't see it, but heard it. Sorry for the rather vague time line.

Re: Train Bulletin Board

Wifey says she might pop down at the public museum to take a look at the bulletin board there. I'll post it when she finishes that project. She just picked up an old small railroad lantern today to decorate a shelf... I let her know it sounds like she's turning into a railfan :) If she's going to t...

Re: Shortline Train Location Updates - March 2021

The Otsego boxcars were on the Otsego line in Plainwell when I came through at 6:15 this evening. They usually pick those up on the return trip. Not sure what would have been in those that went past you. I know they often have boxcar traffic for the MQT.

Re: Shortline Updates February, 2021

Sounds like the GDLK has started north from Plainwell. EOT signal is getting weaker. Unsure of the consist as they were in Otsego when I came across the tracks. Hey Jim - what frequency is the EOT broadcasting at for GDLK? That might help me get just enough of a heads up for when I'd like to photog...

Re: Shortline Updates February, 2021

Yes, they do have work on their way north, if the businesses require it. They run faster than 10, but don't know their speed limit. http://railroadfan.com/wiki/index.php/Grand_Elk#Grand_Elk_Customers There is the list of Grand Elk customers. They have work at Bay Valley Foods in Wayland. There's tw...

Re: Shortline Updates February, 2021

GDLK was NB from Plainwell at 6:15. Got to the crossing late so I didn't catch the numbers on the power, but they were both black, one with the GDLK emblem. Twenty-six (I think) cars, mostly tanks and CHs. Saw 1 loaded center beam.

Re: New Signal Installation Below Blue Water Bridge?

I thought of that scenario - one of my jobs at work is to think of and prevent or mitigate such things. It just seems to me if that were the concern that they would want to do that with all of the supports. Maybe they are mostly concerned with the scenario that risks dropping the span across a shipp...

Re: New Signal Installation Below Blue Water Bridge?

I agree its for some sort of security or safety. It looks like the bollards replaced cement barricades (I forgot the technical name for those) which are visible on the 2019 street view. I'm not exactly sure what the perceived threat is (drunk/reckless driver maybe?) since none of the other support s...

Re: New Signal Installation Below Blue Water Bridge?

Probably has more to do with the upcoming reconstruction of the Blue Water Bridge. My guess is that train traffic will be coordinated with construction activities. They won't necessarily need a gate on the north side since they won't be in there very long.

Re: Hamilton/Allegan Abandoned ROW Q&A

Amazing how before I saw this post, the old Sanborn map made finding the diamond easier and thus the ROW. I was able to trace it to almost the junction. Didn't Montieth Junction have a tower and flagstop at one point? Did that also include where it crossed the GR&I? As this map shows, there was not...

Re: Hamilton/Allegan Abandoned ROW Q&A

I also see zero trace of the Interurban ROW that was abandoned in the 20’s. Has anyone ever been able to detect the interurban grade anywhere between Martin and Allegan? Take a look here, I believe this is the grade. Monteith Jct would be in the field if they had left the tracks intact. https://www...
