Re: Atkinson Railroad Update
My 1939 issue of Railway Engineering and Maintenance Cyclopedia has been sitting on the kitchen table for a few weeks now. Browsing its many pages during a lunch, or "meal", one particular photo continues to stand out to me in the section devoted to track work. If you look carefully, you will notice...

Re: Miniature DT&I caboose in Saginaw News
Better late than NEVER. Participating in Internet Forums has never been my strong point. I'm sorry I missed NS3322's question until now. Setting up the railroad could have turned into an annual activity had I stayed in that community. Because I was already in the process of relocating to the other s...

Economy-of-means signal installation.
No complicated mechanical mechanism.
No line-wires.
No Wi-Fi connection.
No computer software.
Simple enough operating rule for five-year-old to understand.
SLOW DOWN, and Stop Ahead ; )

Re: Atkinson Railroad Update
Brief Update. There is a little more rise going over the culvert (a couple inches or so) I'm likely going to accept. Going through the curve, the elevation changes slightly again but my objective of keeping the route as flat and level as possible is working out nicely. With additional voids required...

Atkinson Railroad Update
Updates on building a miniature railway seem insignificant or irrelevant during an ongoing world pandemic. Nonetheless progress re-setting up a 74-year-old railroad is taking place. Building the sub grade began last year at this same time which included making a culvert utilizing broken concrete blo...

Re: No Engineer Required
The track I have is spaced at 12-15/16". The gauge was established by my grandfather who began building his equipment in 1946. Yes, very familiar with Russ Eldred's railroad layout. During the 1990's, I would frequent the track often but have not returned for a visit in quite some time. Ironically, ...

Creativity from clever people during this pandemic is encouraging... and predictable. (Folks using Radio Flyer wagons to pull their golf clubs around a golf course for example.) Steamlogger; you have posted a fun video and for what it's worth, ballast is indeed available in Michigan. The Newaygo Div...

Very good observation Henry.
Perhaps a motivated Internet sleuth could/will figure out what New York Central wrecker may have been working that wreck back in 1910.

Below is a URL to photos of Ann Arbor Railroad crane 3187.

Still poking around the Internet... but it sure looks like the wrecker in the 1910 DT&I photos is identical to AA wrecker 3187.

Re: DT&I Historic News Photos 3-14-1910
During earlier days on the Internet... (very early 2000's) I recall seeing a photo of an Ann Arbor crane working a wreck somewhere in northern Michigan that looked very similar to the crane shown in these 1910 pictures. There does not appear to be any record of the DT&I owning a Bucyrus wrecker. (Th...

Re: DT&I Historic News Photos 3-14-1910
Matt, let's just say I've been "multitasking" between building a Detached Garage workshop, and making progress on the roadbed for the railroad. The wrecker was tossed back into storage abruptly when I relocated to the western side of the state two summers ago. Attached photo taken from atop the gara...

Re: Websites, Forums for American Flyer "Diehards"?
Over the weekend, a day was spent completely cleaning all the electrical connecting points; the wheels, the axles, and the armature commutator on the 342 engine. Checked the operation of the brushes and spring pressures and the worm gear cavity was re-lubed as were all the pivot points and axles. Up...

Re: Websites, Forums for American Flyer "Diehards"?
Among the sediments I'm plucking from the carnage is a number 342 0-8-0 engine. There's an issue with the reversing mechanism in the tender on this particular model. It still makes the "Chug..Chug.." sound though... so that's a nice plus. I'm not sure if this is the D.C. only model or the A.C. and D...

Re: Websites, Forums for American Flyer "Diehards"?
OooH Rah Trainman2223. The white powder attribute is something I do remember on certain pieces. Back in the '90s, I recall watching the B unit from one of the Santa Fe engines disintegrate over time. It was the only piece that degraded like that. There is some "mildew" on some of this stuff but it d...

Re: Websites, Forums for American Flyer "Diehards"?
Well this is just plain goofy. I have been a competent repair person (or so I thought ; ) having worked on multi-million dollar pieces of equipment. I'm discovering the reeving sequence for re-stringing my American Flyer wrecker is not a task for the faint-of-heart. No wonder most of the EBAY pictur...

Websites, Forums for American Flyer "Diehards"?
Enjoying a [memory moment] unpacking American Flyer equipment. This stuff has been dropped, dragged, and played with to its weakest soldering connections. (There's plenty of curiosity factor remaining for this hardy train stuff for 5-year-olds and up). Somewhere on the Internet there must be a predo...

Fascinating.
It looks just like 1970's railroading.
A Rail Fan's moment for sure.
Very Entertaining thread.
