Re: Elkhart, Ind.
New question; Does anyone in the Elkhart Indiana area know if NS has "Yard Limit" signs posted anyplace along the various ROWs? I don't recall seeing any. I would guess there should be one before CP412 westbound and maybe something at CP426 east bound with something on the Grand Elk and E&W branches.

Re: Elkhart, Ind.
Question for any Elkhart rail buffs. The new 3 track 90° turn in Elkhart was made superelevated during the 2017 rebuild. Does anyone know what angle the rails are elevated? And also, are all three track, with their different radius, the same angle or do they differ (more than just tolerance). Always...

Conflicting Aspects?
This railfan is confused. I am trying to learn the various block signals on NS and am not seeing the usefulness of yellow/green/red aspect. I believe it is called Medium Approach. Seams it is redundant with a red/green/red aspect which is called Medium Clear. What does the yellow tell me if I am to ...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
CP421 Old Main 1 & 2 overhead signal is now gone. According to the workers it is not going to the museum as widely thought. It is going to the scrap yard. Cut down this morning by torch. Long live the signal bridge. How many 20th Century Limited's have gone under her.....

Re: EWR Upgrades
Here's a question for you Mishawaka railfan geezers. Does anybody else remember this style of crossing guard on the Twin Branch railroad on McKinley and Jefferson? The vertical lights on the support mast spell out S.T.O.P. when glowing.

Re: EWR Upgrades
Hey Great Lakes. A little more on the old E&W downtown Mishawaka. The pedestrian bridge which now crosses the St Joe river is in the approximate location of the old E&W wood bridge. The old bridge crossed at a shallower angle to the dam and started closer to it on the Central Park side. Half way acr...

Re: EWR Upgrades
Hey Great Lakes. I "worked" at that station for one summer when I was 9 year old. My 'job' was to go out and record the serial numbers of all the cars in the yards and bring them back to the agent. Of course I never received any payment but did get to rub shoulders with a lot of railroad paraphernal...

Re: Elkhart, Main St. Crossing....Not the same :(
The new interlocking /control point now has chain link fencing to spoil your long photo options. Also changed is since you are technically inside the CP there are no signals to look at on the main tracks. With the turn you are blind. All you have is your scanner listing for the defect detector to go...

Re: EWR Upgrades
Hey Great Lakes Railfan, the original E&W from Elkhart did indeed connect to the GTW at main street in Mishawaka at the now gone freight station, also on Main street. Back to the east, just east of Merrifield Street there was a "Y" with the E&W coming in from the northeast and one branch would follo...

Re: Indiana Transportation Museum rolling stock
Yesterday was snooping around Logansport looking for ITM equipment. Did not see anything on north side, west side, or south side of town in any yards. Didn't the city take some cars/engine?

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
This past summer the NS folks have worked at installing / replacing the museum feeder siding. Looks reel nice, albeit jointed rail. Looks like NS plans to use it as a MOW equipment storage siding as well. Quite the win / win plan!

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Some new construction around the Elkhart station today (9/7). New sidewalks are being added from each end of the station to the feeder ramp to the new platform. Also the handicap parking area on the east side of the station is getting new cement slabs. Station caretaker told me asphalt is coming soo...

Re: L&N in Kentucky
Looking more closely the second engine looks to be a SD40 tunnel motor. I missed that earlier. It was a short train, maybe 40 or 50 empty cars. Could have been ingot cars. So does RJ Corman now own the track or do they have track right down the hill into town? I am from northern Indiana and don't kn...

L&N in Kentucky
While eating lunch in Elizabethtown yesterday saw a crew change on main line. Nothing new about such things but the two engines were RJ Corman! I wonder if they are rentals or if something bigger is happening? Isn't that CSX trackage? BTW, what model is the second engine?

N&W varnish blows thru Elkhart this morning
Anybody know anything about a N&W maroon passenger train headed east on NS main in Elkhart today about 8:50 AM? Only caught a glimpse of it as it was moving fast after the turn. Did not see motive power. Not a normal move as all eastbound Amtrak trains run after sunset. Lots of cars. Maybe a ferry m...

Re: Madison Incline Railroad Grade
Question for you guys. The video above that shows footage in North Vernon of the B&O/CSX east west trackage, I wonder if it is still in operation? Last year was over in Lebanon Illinois on Il-4 and the signals were turned 90° with "tracks out of service" signs posted. If you use Street View on Googl...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
[quote="NSSD70ACe"]I haven’t been following this project too closely so forgive me if this was already answered, but what’s going to go in between the current station and the new platform? Looks rather awkward without anything there. Major realignment at CP421 (Elkhart) over the last 12 months. As y...

Re: CP 421 Upgrade
Today the chain link fencing was installed on both the east and west supports. The stakes I saw there earlier in the winter along the platform are now gone and it appears the fencing effort is finished. Sorry, no shots by me today. To busy Dyngusing. Lurker can get them next time he's by there.
