Plenty of equipment operating outside North America has fixed seating with half facing forward and half facing backward, too.

The Hiawatha sets are configured like that, too, with half the seats facing in each direction.

I believe the line was marked for abandonment in 1976 and the state of Michigan paid Conrail a subsidy as the designated operator. It was similar to the agreement with the Michigan Northern and Hillsdale County.

The weekly stats are the least useful. Intermodal can show a major loss if the UPS peak season is shifted by a week or two, even with the same overall traffic levels. A late harvest can skew the weekly grain numbers. And a warm fall can flatten coal, even if traffic comes back in a cold winter.
