Re: Decatur, Mi.

If they are anything like the NS unit grain trains that I handle on my railroad, the answer is "as soon as possible." It behooves the elevator to get those cars loaded and released back to the railroad as soon as possible to avoid extra charges. A 24 hour turn-around time is the desired time-frame. ...

Re: Lansing NS "South Yard"

Where the Lansing Center now stands, there was once the LS&MS depot at the end of the aptly-named Depot Street. It was a handsome building befitting its proximity th the state's capitol. It do not know if it lasted much past World War II, though.

Re: New Detroit River Tunnel "On Hold"

Let us not forget that the way the auto makers do business changed, as well. As the "Big Three" were getting their complacent butts handed to them by Japanese companies in the early '80s, they did learn how to streamline their processes. Instead of having parts plants all over the country sending bo...

Re: Fight on the CKIN

AARR, it would appear that the Town of North Judson, as owner of the track upon which the CKIN operates, wishes to replace the CKIN as the Designated Operator of the line. Further, it would also appear the CKIN has no intention of ceasing operations upon the line when their operating agreement with ...

AARR, you are correct but the name of the Co-Op is North central.

Michael, you are correct. The monstrous greenhouse that is owned by some Dutch outfit is on the west side of town, as well!

Re: Conrail Operations on the Old Road

The INE has kept the track in place to Snow Prairie Road west of Batavia for car storage purposes. As for the business that is done by the INE in Coldwater-it is keeping them quite busy as there are several that are shipping/receiving more than they ever have. The INE has five customers in Cold wate...

Re: Amtrak whistle blowing

I don't know about other places but all of the professional railroaders I know (myself included) call it "sounding our whistle" not "horn." The posts along side the tracks are still called "whistleposts." Sorry if that doesn't make sense but some traditions die a slow death.

Re: INER Hamilton IN bridge removal project

It is my understanding that this project will be only partially completed this calender year. The tubes will be installed and the the fill will be brought up to the bottom of the current bridge deck. Next year (at about this time), during an expected lull in traffic patterns, the deck will be lifted...

Re: Barges might soon run across L. Mich - Threat to railroa

Yeah, and not everything falls under that either. Yes, there are certain rules for certain routes, but here are exemptions to everything. Either way, it makes no sense to be using smaller inland river barges to move large amounts of product. You are right, 12Bridge. If river barges on the Great Lak...

Re: The Yipsi Branch

YpsiAmtrakBoy summed things up pretty well but one small mistake was that the Little River Railroad uses none of it today. The Little River Railroad, as you know, DIB, runs on the "Old Road" in Coldwater and occasionally as far as Hillsdale but none of that takes place on the old Ypsi branch as none...
