Re: New siding-business in Traverse City???

Still haven't been back to Box Pop this month. I highly doubt that plywoods of any type will be delivered via rail as the amount they use is dependent on whatever they are crafting the container into for the customer. It's interesting to see all the different creations. No two are alike really. We k...

Re: New siding-business in Traverse City???

Pulled into the location yesterday to have a look see. Not much has changed with the siding since the picture was taken but the surrounding areas is being prepared. The site around it and to the south looks to be being readied for concrete or asphalt. Not a big spur presently, maybe they'll extend i...

Re: New siding-business in Traverse City???

Howdy. -Stayed away for a bit due to a troll infestation. It's a really cool shop there and their finished products are pretty cool. Due to probably do another drop there soon, will try and grab a pic or two.

Re: New siding-business in Traverse City???

Why build a run around siding there when there is already one in Grawn just a few miles south? Presently there is a rail-bike company using the trackage from the run around in Grawn to the US37 bridge (before Beitner rd.). That track has not been maintained since the last train out in the mid teens...

Re: GLC RR

Unless someone from GLC specifically says there's a crew and/or power shortage, it's just railfan speculation. There's not enough traffic north of Cadillac to require another crew- TC and Petoskey need service maybe 2-3 times a month. Petoskey stock piles plastic pellet cars, it's not like they nee...

Re: MIGN Customers

Yes, they had the feed mill (Farm Bureau) that was at the small rebuilt PC yard next to it along Woodmere Ave (covered grain hoppers). When the C&O left in 82, they gained Cherry Growers (insul. boxcars), the paper place on South Airport road (plug door boxes mainly BN), now an equipment dealer and ...

Re: Great Lakes Central Updates December 2021

Pretty good chance for a train tonight in TC. Transformer unloaded off the HD flat at the Wolverine spur along Keystone Road plus, two empties pushed off the Amerhart siding onto the main in Williamsburg. No idea regarding the scrap dealer as I didn't pass it today

GLC's Traverse run with large transformer

Surprised it has not been mentioned on here (that I can find) then again, I didn't look too hard. Last week, GLC brought in a depressed center well car carrying a huge transformer load. The sub station along Keystone Rd. south of Cass in Traverse City, was the receiver. As of Friday night, it was st...

Re: Traverse City Yards

The Pennsy had a yard in the area of where Clinch park Marina and former zoo was. That was moved later to where the new TC Library now stands. The latter only had three tracks with a parallel spur spur to the farm bureau coop. C&O had Boardman yard of course. The Iron works also had a small yard. M&...

Copemish Depot

Was cruising through Glen Arbor yesterday at work and noticed that the depot there (Which I believe was the former Copemish one) had all the land cleared away from it and, the building next to it was removed. It also appeared that it was to be relocated. Anyone else know about this?

Re: GLC Acquiring SD35's?

Saw them on a video last night. Good looking old girls they are. GLC won't have to do much to them to sort of make them look like their own. Never thought I would've seen the day when six axle power was getting to be the norm on the old Annie line.

TC track work completion?

Passing along Keystone Rd. and River Rd. pretty much everyday in Traverse City. Last year as everyone knows they did quite a large amount of work up here. The stretch along River rd. looks great after the tamping work was finished however, from Hoch rd. to Hammond has still to be completed. Ballast ...

Re: New rail yard coming to Kalkaska on the GLC

Williamsburg's Amerhart cannot go the transload route. They would have to keep two fork lifts there (Beam stock and TGI's comes in 60ft lengths and utilizes two lifts to remove each bunk). Plus, They don't have the extra trucks to handle the haul back and forth there. They get in bulk lumber and bea...

Re: New rail yard coming to Kalkaska on the GLC

Sounds interesting. At least we can all be thankful that they're trying to push for more rail traffic. A new yard along with the oil service tracks could see a better transload for the plastic pellets also. Maybe Frac sand too or natural gas? Getting rid of a potentially hazardous pipeline I'm all f...

Re: Another dumb AA question......

Yoplait never used rail in Reed City.....and they got the ok from the state to build across the right-of-way before any other part of the line from Comstock Park to Cadillac was pulled up If I can recall, didn't they look into rail for this? Relaying is pricey I know but the distance isn't too grea...

Re: Another dumb AA question......

I'd like to think that the Annie line will once again be "one". Between the two I'd bet on GLC. Who knows, one day I could wake up and see the whole thing now run by LSRC...…. or even a new "Michigan Consolidated or Mi-Con". It costs nothing to speculate. Michigan Rail is hard to figure out though t...

Another dumb AA question......

The AA shut down North of Ann Arbor and kept just its current 50 mile stretch back in the 80's. Why? Is it because that section guaranteed them easy money and little hassle? There was freight service on the line from Yuma to Ann Arbor portion. GLC humps some pretty big trains everyday on it. Unit gr...

MIGN story

Just remembered this the other day and don't remember if I told anyone on here or not. Back in the Michigan Northern days, during their "Cherry Blossom Special" during TC's Cherry Fest, that year was extremely dry. I believe to start, they had Geep 1603 pulling the trains but at least once a day, th...

TC track maint.

So, with spring approaching and frost soon out of the ground I assume the track work in the TC area will continue again. Anyone know to what percentage they are complete and what still needs to be done? I know the stretch near Hoch road still needs tamped and flattened (they keep skipping over this ...

Re: U.P. question

E&LS don't really seem like an up to date high tech sort of railroad to me. In all actuality with what I've seen posted at times here and on the facebook sites, it seems they're like a "Duke boys/ Ma & Pa" sort of system (I'm sure I'm completely wrong but, the net doesn't give them a fair shake). I ...
