Continental Rail Gateway

Does anyone happen to know the status of the new Detroit-Windsor rail tunnel project, also known as the Continental Rail Gateway? The last news I encountered was from November 2013 where project leaders stated that construction could start in one year: http://blogs.windsorstar.com/tag/continental-ra...

Re: Milwaukee Jct Acme Paint

I guess I just figured that old way of doing things would have gone the same way as the dodo bird and dial up modems. Software and net protocols do not rust or corrode. They do not "age." Only human attitudes, based in irrational emotions, change. Web 2.0/3.0 is a fashion, using glitz and flash to ...

Re: Milwaukee Jct Acme Paint

The tower in the photograph is SAINT AUBIN STREET TOWER, which controlled the road crossing signals at the crossing of SAINT AUBIN and CLAY STREETS across NYC and GTW tracks. This tower was approximately one-half mile North of MILWAUKEE JUNCTION. Thanks for this info. The area has changed drasticll...

Milwaukee Jct Acme Paint

An image posted to the newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.rail shows a Detroit scene from 1971: http://s27.postimg.org/8y5fytkw3/Detroit_MI_5_1971.jpg Doing some research, I discover that Acme Paint was located on St. Aubin street so this must be Milwaukee Junction. Acme Paint seems to have been a larg...

Re: Military Train To Where?

Link to the spot in Grayling where they can unload, loop track even: http://binged.it/1jymWjW Even though that seems the likliest place, there are no roads going from there to the camp itself, which is about 7 miles southeast. Any convoy of vehicles would have to be sent through the city of Gaylord.

In the future, then, the only reason to keep that line open will be to service Camp Grayling. Would that be a fair statement?

Otherwise we'll be seeing military convoys on I-75.

Military Train To Where?

On the Usenet newsgroup there is a series of photos dated 3/2012 showing a northbound military train through Novi. Here is a single image from that series: http://s28.postimg.org/65jl6qv1p/Military_Train_Novi_MI_03_07_2012r.jpg Where is this train going? My guess would be Camp Grayling. However, I h...

Re: Packard Plant Rail Service

Um...yeah. These "buyers" are actually living in another galaxy somewhere. Their nonsensical "statement" from yesterday includes talk of "prophecy," Albert Einstein and "Hernando Deesoto" [sic]. Not to mention "Hyland Park (sic)." It seems that everyone has been deceived by a pack of crazies, yet n...

Re: Packard Plant Rail Service

That is on Conrails Beltline extension ... There are a few customers north of the plant. Soon to be GM Poletown ... It's hard to remember that Conrail is still in business with all the NS locos prowling around the area. But GM Poletown is not linked to the Beltline. It is serviced from the nearby C...

Packard Plant Rail Service

A group of developers has purchased the old Packard Plant on Detroit's east side. The plans are to produce modular homes and offices on the site: http://www.freep.com/article/20131028/BUSINESS06/310280070/Packard-plant-Jill-Van-Horn Norfolk Southern operates two branch lines on the east side, and on...

Re: Need Help with Location

Thanks for the replies. Livernois yard sure has been gutted over the past few decades, but it's still the only location that can bring back a little of what railroading used to be like in the Detroit region. Maybe the construction of the Detroit Intermodal Terminal (if it ever happens) at the site c...

Need Help with Location

I picked up this image on the Usenet group alt.binaries.pictures.rail. The information specifies that it is from Detroit in August 1978. Does anyone recognize the location? I have never seen those towers in the background anywhere before and they must be long demolished. My first guess would be Live...

Re: Need Help To Identify Location

Actually, the location is Mound Road and Davison on Detroit's east side. It's just a bit north of McNichols. The former Davison yard was immediately northeast of that intersection and remnants of the tracks can be clearly seen on the Bing Maps birdseye view of the location. (Google Maps must have an...

Re: Need Help To Identify Location

In Detroit- I think on the Detroit terminal yard somewhere on the east side. I have a very similar picture. Engine is 6323(?) think it was moved to Chicago. Yes, the name of the image, as shown in the link, indicates that it is GT6323 somewhere in Detroit. At first, I also suspected it is the old D...

Need Help To Identify Location

I found this image on the newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.rail and I wonder if anyone can identify the original location. The information indicates that the photograph was taken in September 1976. It shows a GTW steam locomotive and a roundhouse. Most likely everything has since been demolished. htt...

Re: DETROIT NEWS: Second Canada-US rail tunnel plan touts tr

If they need more money to get the project rolling, I would suggest that they divert funds from the ridiculous mass transit rail systems that are being proposed. An expansion of freight rail infrastructure would be the wiser investment. A new tunnel may not reap all of the projected benefits, but mo...
