Re: Dispatching styles and the “RN”

I work as a dispatcher now since I got furloughed as a engineer when the Rona started tanking things. I couldn't imagine working as a dispatcher without my prior knowledge of the territory, understanding where the grades are, where to hold the trains, what fits where, exactly how many minutes betwee...

Re: PM 18 Found

I thought the boat with the gold sank earlier and sailed out of Frankfort so wouldn't it have been a Ann Arbor boat that sank with it? Either way for the naysayers there is a tv show on the History Channel about it. Its fascinating.

What kind of Computer Should I get

Its time to replace my 2009 Dell Laptop. I haven't looked or kept up on any kind of computer tech or specs in the last decade. What kind of laptop, tablet, desktop of computering machine should I get to have enough power to run photoshop, run excel and do basic things. I don't play games.

Re: Last Few Outings in the Yoop.

Great report CAT! Love all the details. The Newberry train to Munising doesn't generate many carloads of business. And log business on all lines seems way down to almost nothing. Logs on the CN almost do not exists up here anymore. K.I. Sawyer has gets a couple a week in AOK 50' log cars. Nothing c...

Last Few Outings in the Yoop.

Been a few months since I last posted. Been busy, very busy with work. Any way, I'll start out with some snow pictures since its been so dang hot up here the last two weeks. April 23rd.. Coming south from L'Anse on their way back to Ishpeming, L539 trundles south across one of the numerous Tama Cree...

Somebody has been hauling material out of the Ohio Mine near the Baraga/ Marqeutte County Line. I wonder if that is where the ore is going. The trucks turn west, they stain the road with red mud.

Re: Brine Mine

I was curious if liquid calcium chloride was worth transporting. Home Depot sells a 275 gallon tote of 35% solution for $1090.99 with free pick-up at the store. I guess that means it's worth it. Add $55.00 for curbside shipping. Not sure how much to add for health care costs moving it from the curb...

Re: Upper Peninsula Feb 2020 Happenings

Great pictures and reporting CAT. Were you excited about the tunnel motor? Thanks for the E&LS pictures. I'd like to see more of E&LS. Would you happen to know how many carload are being shipped from the mine at Humbolt? Pretty excited its been the same 4 SD60s up here for most of the winter. The t...

Upper Peninsula Feb 2020 Happenings

Picking up where I left off at the end of January. Shipping shut down is in full force on the lakes. I pass my time by taking leisurely snowshoe hikes, and some me time in the plow truck or semi hauling snow. What a life to lead. January ended with CN running the old WC Jordan Spreader up to Negaune...

Re: When you are looking to buy a new lens...

I was hesitant to spend the money on a good L lens but I am happy that I did. This is the first train I shot with my 24-105L on my first gen 7D in JPEG format. Open the photo in full screen and you will see how crisp and clear the photo is. I did not sharpen it. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/4...

Re: U.P. question

They track the cars in RMI. Its a car reporting software that all railroads use. Showing cars in certain tracks will start billing for car hire, apply switch fees or storage fees. It is basically a hi tech inventory system. The tablets used by cars are a more simpler form for the simple minded to sh...

I'm gonna update the CN L540, L539 U745 jobs. Updated the first post to reflect these changes :D My bad, when I saw the post on Dave's page I didn't realize there was a page two to this thread lol. AARR, The Newberry local moves back 1 day every week. They leave Newberry for the west and park it ar...

Re: Upper Peninsula Railroad Operations Thread

I'm gonna update the CN L540, L539 U745 jobs. U745 now handles the LS&I freight at Queens. They will pick up Queen's freight when the time comes them to. Some days they shove it to Partridge to prevent reordering hazmat cars. L539/L540 L540 is the Nestroia to Partridge symbol. On Monday the crew com...

Re: Mid January around the Central U.P. L'Anse, Escanaba & M

The loads came from the scrap yard next to the car shops. They pushed cars in and pulled loaded scrap cars out. Munising seems to be hit or miss I haven't nailed down how often they get there. I saw them on a Sunday. I think it may be 3 day a week service. There were 8 cars at the plant 6 boxes and ...

Mid January around the Central U.P. L'Anse, Escanaba & MORE!

Been a busy month of snow plowing up here, but I still managed to catch some decent rail activity. On January 9th, I ventured south to the Escanaba area and caught the L549 near Rock kicking up some snow. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49357911748_306d636f13_c.jpg L549 at Rock by Mike Tabone , ...

In one of your photos, you shot the 540 job shoving back into Euclid yard after dropping some cars for the MR....then later, you have a shot of the Mineral Range pulling into Euclid yard at the south end....last I knew, the interchange point for the original MR was at Winthrop Jct.....has the MR-CN...

Re: Marquette Area, December 2019, Early January 2020

Thank you for posting CAT. Your photos and report are enjoyable to follow. It looks like the L540 had a big train when you caught them. Any pulp wood coming out of the L'Anse area? I haven't seen any pulp wood moving that way. Interesting note, I did see some scrap gons come out of Sawyer end of Oc...
