On previous excursions (and presumably this one), caboose seating was available as an extra-fare option. I think that they usually can sell 10-12 seats per caboose. It's definitely a fun way to ride (I did on one leg of the trip to Alma in July), though you learn pretty quickly about train dynamics,...

Closest thing I can come up with would be when the GRE ran an excursion for their employees, guests and some folks from WMRHS from Fuller Junction to Ionia a few years back, using C&M cars. 'glad that I was able to ride it, then. Was this it? {snipped photo of a switcher leading a dome car across t...

Four of us went to the Div 4 MCR NMRA "Carnival of Trains" in Berea, Ohio yesterday (it also runs today). It was a great show, filling four buildings at the Cuyahoga County Fair Grounds. Everyone found something they'd been looking for. It was very much worth the trip. In Saline, Rails on Wheels is ...

I just saw that Digitrax sells their Athearn wiring harness separately as the DHAT. If you were to combine that with the D13SRJ Garry mentioned, you could get a lower-work solution that's less expensive than the DH123AT, with a better decoder. Whether it's worth the $8.95 list/$7.95 street price for...

Despite Loy's Toys having closed due to his retiring, there is a good description of the process he used on a "blue-box" (non-Genesis) Athearn F7 on his web site at http://loystoys.com/install/install-athearn-f7.html . The Digitrax DH123AT conversion is a little easier, but more expensive. Currently...

Well, as far as cat litter for ballast, the first question is: Do you have a cat now, or do you think that you'll get one during the lifetime of the layout? If the answer to either of these questions is "yes", then I can think of a really obvious reason why using cat litter would be a VERY bad idea....

A fact that's not as well-known as we'd like is that the ORS layout is very open to first-time operators. It's an "education by immersion" approach, where we try to teach one of the many forms of operation (in our case, timetable and train order, using car cards to control car movements) by providin...

The layout's designed so that (with some effort) it can be taken down, packed up and hauled out to give hands-on clinics on operations. Tear-down and packing takes about six hours. Set-up takes from ten to twelve hours. There's a good chance we'll be taking it up to Grand Rapids for the NMRA Nationa...

When I was last down there in 1998 or 1999, the plant was still there, a couple of miles west of Logansport on the south side of SR 25, just west of the US-35 overpass. I don't remember off-hand who owned it at the time. A quick Google check lists an IBP/Tyson pork plant at the old Wilson location. ...

Yup, that's the Thornapple River bridge. I'm looking at building it in two scales- the first one is the N scale one shown here, which is for the Plymouth Subdivision N scale Free-Mo project. The second one will be an HO version to use with the SE Michigan Free-Mo group. Both versions will represent ...

This might be of interest to anyone who wants to be involved in a new modular club. On Tuesday, May 20, John Young will present a general introduction to Free-Mo, with a view towards what it will take to get a Southeast Michigan Free-Mo group off the ground. Topics to be covered include: * A discuss...
