I caught the 1177 leading the 2052 north through Oscoda on January 4. I believe this is the first time I've seen EMD's this far north. Interestingly, there were two CSX gons tacked on to the end of the train that night. I rarely see anything other than covered hoppers on that line.

Gregg,

Thank you for the information. I think this unit would be ideal for pulling excursion trains, and it would probably be well cared for. Are both of these groups in Michigan?

When did the 974 get damaged, and what sort of event would bend the frame? Did it collide with something? Last I was in Michigan, it was reported to me that the 469 needed new engine seals as a result of being overheated at some point. This is the first I've heard of these units being scrapped. Does...

The 646 was recently sold to an outfit in Colorado. I'm not sure if it has been physically moved yet, but perhaps LSRC could give us an update on that unit. The 976 was gutted by a fire a few years back near West Branch. This was the result of a burst fuel line. This unit was scrapped, though I'm su...

North Platte, NE

I was on a transcon flight home from the west coast yesterday evening, and when the in-flight movie concluded, I peered out from my window and was treated to the sight of none other than this enormous yard. If you haven't checked out the aerial views yet, do so here: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&...

Where has this caboose been "hiding?" The LSRC Bay City yard perhaps?

LSRC,

Thank you for the pictures. I especially liked the ones on the bridge near LaFarge. I wish I had the time to loiter around Alpena and wait for things like you have. Great work with the pictures.

The first two derailed cars. I believe the second car in this picture is former BN: http://www.markvz.com/images/Deraiil1216.jpg The single derailed hopper to the north of the others, taken via zoom from near the other two cars. The zoom has exaggerated the poor condition of the rails, note the dist...

LSRC Oscoda

Just caught the LSRC heading south through Oscoda at the KOA. 281 was leading a short train at approx. 5 mph. I assume the slow speed is due to the poor track condition and the rash of derailments in the area. LSRC had another 7 cars derail on the 16th between Oscoda and Tawas. I found 3 of the cars...

LSRC Standish

I rolled through Standish today around 4:00 and found the 281 on the main accompanied by what looked like 2 Bluewater cars on the siding at the depot. One was a brown GTW (I believe) car and the other was a silver dome car. I had seen these cars sitting on the siding last Wednesday w/o power. Is thi...

I travel that road regularly. The trains really move in that area as you can see. It figures that I hear nothing about it in the Savannah area but I see it on this board while I'm visiting family in Michigan.

D&M RPO Car

Can anyone give me a brief history on this recently uncovered car? I stopped by the depot in St. Johns today and took a look at it. One set of trucks is installed while the other end of the car is still sitting on the trailer. The car looks pretty well worn, and it looks like some thorough replaceme...

SD70, What I had said is that one of your responses employed fearmongering. I never called you a "fearmonger." I would hate to think that you are taking any of this personally. I think this is a good discussion. If you have taken any of this personally I apologize for giving you the impression that ...

For every trespasser who posts his story on the internet, there are hundreds that do not. My question about trespassers in general stands: What are the railroads supposed to do about it? There's no way to protect even a small percentage of the ROW against trespassers. You may catch the cart kids but...

SD70, I'm missing the part where I ever said it was not illegal to trespass on railroad property or that I encourage such things. With respect to the other thread, I stated several times that the railroad-cart kids would deserve whatever punishment or injury that they got as a result of their action...

I bet they won't be climbing on railcars again anytime soon. It's pretty interesting how they got shocked without contacting the wires.

I hope that Amtrak and NS sucessfully appeal the verdict.

What the trespassers did was illegal and they should accept the consequences of their actions.

wkuhl, I respect your views as a railroad employee. I do not think that what they are doing is trivial, though I also don't think it's the travesty that some make it out to be. A closure of the line for a few hours and some investigaion is not trivial, though it's not really that bad either, conside...

The helicopters are looking good. I toured the American Eurocopter plant in Columbus, MS earlier this year and I was surprised to see those very helicopters stenciled with "Traverse City" sitting on the shop floor being refurbished. It looks like they did a very nice job with them. I'm glad to see t...
