Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming
Track from Paw Paw to Lawton was removed as part of scrap drive at start of WWII, as were many other track segments around the US. Track was then stubbed north of where I-94 now is. IIRC only about three or four more car lengths removed by contractor building freeway right of way fence. C&O and NYC ...

For many years pror to sale, Soo Line had a 241,000 pound limit on car weight without idler cars. Locomotive weight was 247,000 lbs., although the CP did use a pair of RS1200's when intermodal traffic was heavy.

You got to start with ties to hold the rail in gauge, then you got to get rid of the worst low spots and improve cross level. The rail is so kinked from lack of maintenance that it will break were the worst low spots were once it is raised. Next problem is finding any 80lb rail the to replace broken...

Would not hurt to arm yourself with a little knowledge before you hand over any cash for a watch. If you try a Google search along the lines of..."Railroad watch requirements"...

There have been far more accidents (with and without lose of life) than what are shown on that site. Seems they did a random pick of the reports for each year.

Re: Old KLS&C depot in Paw Paw gone
The line from Paw Paw to Lawton was torn up (along with a lot of other lines nationwide) as part of a scrap drive at the start of WWII. I believe east of Lawton never made it it past the early years of the Great Depression except for some trackage down to street level around Mattawan. In the late '5...

That spur track just west of 43rd St at Tea Pot Dome has been there as long as I can remember, which is about 1953. My uncle had the first farm south of there on west side. Used to be a siding on the top of Lawrence hill on north side IIRC.

Waterloo to Steubenville was not used as far back as 1959 according to the NYC enginemen who worked the Waterloo turn out of Ft Wayne. The Diamond had been removed by then too.

If you use Google Earth views, click on the clock symbol (upper left) and it will show the oldest view available.
In the case of Saline, it is 1992. Going back 15-20 years makes a big difference when following some right-of-ways.

Here's another idea, start with this 1915 map and follow it across each township:

I don't know why, but my confuser won't leave a live link anymore.

The NS is VERY tough on crews exceeding the maximum authorized speed. If the city police radar trains they will soon find most will be 2-3 mph under just as Conrail Jon says. FRA requires railroads to monitor engineer rules compliance through event recorder downloads and like everything else NS take...

Bridges go over north approach to locks. Locks themselves are south of bridges.
Seems odd an "Locks" electrician an would be under the bridges very often, except to change an occasional light bulb on the approach walls.
