Re: Trains per day map
Ns line is busier across IN anyways. Go stay 24 hours to get more reliable numbers for both lines rather than basing guesses on trains per hour, which can vary so blazin much no matter where you are (went nearly 2 hours without a train at gibbon junction ne and ended up with 100 trains). Recently go...

on a side note, 7 UP's total right now between Chicago and KC. Impressive

Re: Rail fanning Porter Junction
If I had 4 hours to spend in Chesterton. I'd pick either 5am-9, or 4pm-8. Thanks for all the info. I do have a few extra questions: Which is busier: 8am-2pm or 2pm to 8pm. Becuase of the low volume in GR, I as going for volume. I definatly want to be there for something off the CSX, and going in ei...

Re: Rail fanning Porter Junction
Mid day can definitely be the slowest time of day. The reason I say that is lack of intermodals and other regular trains. NS intermodals are very consistent as you probably know. In the morning there are guaranteed trains: EB vans 24M, 20E by 8am usually, plus a whole slough before them (206, 24N, 2...

Re: Is it safe?
Fostoria is fine, any rumors otherwise are vastly overblown. That's what I thought too until I got mugged by 2 guys there in Nov 2010. I was threatened at gun point, got my phone stolen, and received a massive blow to the face, all of that in the middle of the day right off Columbus Ave. I was alon...

Re: NS Chicago Line Intermodal Symbols
I thought I heard 16N calling signals not too long ago. So there are 2 Elkhart to Conway's now? I forgot to respond earlier. Everyday that I have seen I05, the 205 ran also. Sometimes the next train behind it, other times 8 hrs after it. Thanks for your updates. So many changes on this line all the ...

Re: NS Chicago Line Intermodal Symbols
A few observations. 294 looks like just Bethlehems. 20K is now a short fella again, the 3 units it regularly gets is a tad much. 25V was a beast of a train the few times I saw it and didn't seem to be very consistent 12:43am one day, 9:51am another. Bethlehem traffic must have really picked up. 23Z ...

Re: NS Chicago Line Intermodal Symbols
Thanks for your updates too, Brett. I'll be railfanning Toledo West next week, I'll let you know if I see the trains or not. This is all just according to the website, so I'm not sure what the deal is yet. If it is true then 23M looks like will be terminate in Harrisburg from now on. But 25V + 23Z >...

Re: NS Chicago Line Intermodal Symbols
Noticed some changes on the NS website. 25V is a new symbol to Chicago from Elizabeth and Bethlehem, offering only 5.5 hr later travel time than 21J between Beth and Chi. 23Z looks like it now runs from Croxton to Chicago, with a pickup and setout in Toledo. I was in Berea Monday night and saw a WB ...

What is the industry in the upper left hand corner of the Deshler diamond picture? Appears to be a company called Graminex. http://www.graminex.com/ Is it served by rail? Appears not but looks like it could be with the location of the old connection tracks http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Graminex&hl=...

Re: NS updates 8/2-8/31
Boy it sounds like the flood gates have been opened on the Chicago line. In the last hour and a half I've heard on the Bryan stream an I0W, 294, M6E, 18M, M4N, 358, 39E, 31M, 27R, 21G and another van on the way, plus a 401 sitting around somewhere. 3EB extras+401 (eb coal right?), and an extra auto ...

Re: NS Chicago Line Intermodal Symbols
Other Chicago line notes and questions... 10R is running east of Elkhart again. I saw I05 run Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week. I don't exactly get why. I initially thought it was running because maybe the regular section of 205 was late and they didnt want UPS traffic in Buffalo to wait, so...
