Re: Great Lakes Central Passenger TC

Has anyone bought a ticket yet? I was going to but with limited service beginning 2025 I wasn't sure if I would have plans that day. But seriously if there was a strong market for travel between Ann Arbor and Traverse City lease some busses and start hauling passengers. A bus could run up M23 and I...

Re: Where Is It?

McIntyre St Golden CO. Those looked like beer cars. So Coors just up the road from the Colorado Railroad Museum seemed a likely first choice.

Re: Michigan Northern presence in Rockford, MI

It's a good story. If it was EHH it would have been BN. They did have a line into the southern Illinois coal fields. BN being a big interchange partner with Conrail would have more influence than the humble IC.

Re: The Future?

Rumor is G&W won't renew their contracts for the MQT or the MS in 2024, anyone else hear this? 3 years is an awful long horizon to have that made as a firm decision. Early for a firm decision but not to early to get negotiations started. The people working at these levels of management generally do...

Re: The Future?

Per a post on facebook, the three grain elevators on the MMRR have stopped shipping and have gone to trucks because the G&W increased the pricing. So i see a GLC and Lake State operation very soon. I don't know about MMRR. Most of the grain from MAC Newaygo is used with 200 miles and leaves by truc...

Re: The Future?

It has more to do with their customers than who can buy what. The potential for new traffic and the stability of what they already have. The MQT for example looks heavily dependent on PCA and the salt/chemical business from Manistee and Ludington. Maybe three or so primary shippers? Their train leng...

Re: CN Flagging crossings in Pontiac

Why then 1966 would NYC allow a 60MPH light engine movement and three years later on essentially the same railroad run by the same people the limit dropped to 30MPH. I will theorize that behind the 60MPH ETT limit was a sheaf bulletins and slow orders reducing the limits where track conditions cause...

Re: CN Flagging crossings in Pontiac

I recall Conrail limiting light engines to 30MPH. As I understood it due to the locomotive nosing at higher speeds. I was looking to see what RDC cars might have been allowed to do and came across light engine speed. The ETT No. 19 April 1966 Detroit, Canada and Michigan Division says engines 1000 t...

In the 1960's the NYC allowed light engines to run up to track speed not exceeding 60MPH.

Re: CN Flagging crossings in Pontiac

I'd wager an exercise in risk mitigation vs. an actual problem. Paste a car at a crossing and have a lawyer find out you were "testing" new equipment across a public roadway. What could be so different with these coaches that there would be an issue with crossing protection?

Re: GTW 5030 may be going to Pennsylvania

It would be nice to see the 5030 stay nearer it's home rails. However if it stays in the park in Jackson it will continue to deteriorate and be at risk of scrapping. The GTW 5629 might be the best known but there are others that deteriorated to the point moving them was too costly and they were scra...

#1 Boomer is still in use. There are guys in the contraction trade unions who move local to local either as a life style or following large projects. They are called boomers. #2 Ball signals were an early type of signal. A ball was raised and lowered on chain or rope. The ball raised meant the train...

SD80MAC speculated worn shocks. Watch the CSX train go through the crossing a few times from about the 1:00 mark. The lead unit has some vertical movement going on before it hits the low spot at the crossing. The watch the second unit come through the crossing. It goes out of view quickly but appear...

Re: West Michigan Steam Power

I looked at 1947 and 1951 with no reference for the S class in Michigan other than the Old Road which was part of the Toledo Division. The last run of a Niagara was on the Big Four in 1956 so they could have come onto the Michigan Central.
