Re: Amtrak Asset Line Plan FY20-25

Think back a few years. FedEx team drivers with doubles made the trip between east and west coasts in four days. TOFC took five days. FedEx needed a four day service and asked for an expedited service once a week. BNSF looked at not just the cost of the train but the delay to everything else so the ...

Conversely if Amtrak was to incentivize NS they could accomplish the same thing.

Re: New Connection in New Buffalo AMTK.

...it's a project that could easy be the high six figures. I'm just pulling this number out of thin air, but I'd say $2.5- 3 million would be the likely amount. Sounds about right; it has that look of something quoted in an email response from Amtrak or MDOT. How about $20 million... Scroll down to...

Re: New Connection in New Buffalo AMTK.

Practical meaning "likely to succeed or be effective in real circumstances", no. Amtrak and the state are already strapped for cash. Neither is likely to put resources into building a connection for the infrequent passenger who wants to go east that won't travel to Niles or take the bus that already...

Re: 10 Best Country Train Songs of All Time

Folsom Prison Blues wasn't about a train, it was about being in prison wishing you weren't. Beyond that it's entirely subjective. Personally I like some of the older stuff that is closer to its folk music roots. Interestingly the Wabash Canonball was written about the Rock Island. The Carter family ...

Re: New rail yard coming to Kalkaska on the GLC

I'm not negative. I just question who is going to ship freight north by rail to Kalkaska, put it on a truck, send it to Sault St Marie to be loaded on a ship to go...back south. Even then if it would go by ship why not build a dock on Lake Michigan and ship from there. As much as the installation me...

Re: New rail yard coming to Kalkaska on the GLC

There is a style of speaking where you say grand things but with minimal detail. There is a term for it that escapes me. With minimal detail and catchy sound bites the listener can hear what they want to hear. Multiple different meanings to be communicated gaining broad appeal. There is something fo...

The MQT with four units heading south from Newaygo 9:15. For the moment it appears to have settled into a routine of changing crews in Newaygo. Heading south 8:30-9:00AM or so and being back late afternoon. Heading north 7:30-8:30PM or so.

Re: Crazy Topic - G&W in Michigan

Tying back to the OP if G&W would divest some of its Michigan assets. In general private equity posts better returns the public corporations. They hold higher profit expectations and are less tolerant of poor performance. As Raildues Dad points out there is now an additional layer of management. For...

Re: Crazy Topic - G&W in Michigan

Between what Brookfield says about itself and what Motely Fool says, I read it as if the property has a steady cash flow and doesn't need big influxes of capital they hold onto them. For a short line if you need millions for track work or a bridge replacement in hopes that this year sees a better ha...

There have been rumors that the G&W would divest themselves of some lines in Michigan as a result. " What Brookfield says about itself. Re: Amtrak Pere Marquette Return to Service

Budgets are going to be taking a hit, MDOT, Amtrak, everybody. The costs related to high unemployment coupled drops in revenue shutting down a big slice of the economy are going to bring hard choices. The money may just not be there.

Re: GDLK Operations

Prior to being damaged the transfer caboose was intended to be a shoving platform. The crews avoided using it because it was additional moves to switch it onto and off of the train. The looming issue I see with the reverse moves is a pedestrian accident. While we can all say the train had the right ...

Re: GDLK Operations

There is also a line relocation in Kalamazoo in the works if plans are to follow thru. That would be the removal of the GR&I diamond and moving all traffic over to the line at BO and reconecting somewhere north of BO. That would be a project that would have legs under it if they got MDOT and the ci...

Re: GDLK Operations

It would be interesting to see how the economics of building a yard in Three Rivers works out. How many tracks would they build and how long? Materials, grading and install it's $1M+ per mile to lay track. Throw in some land acquisition, engineering, lighting, some form of an office and five tracks ...

Re: Space Question for Aircraft Experts

When I watch a space movie like Star Trek or the like, you see the same maneuvers for the star ships to turn around even though there is no gravity or air to deal with. Is this incorrectly displayed? How should they be doing a this? Yes it is incorrectly displayed. The Star Trek technical manuals a...
