Re: The Steel Wheels Art Gallery featuring railroad art/graffiti

Graffiti on railcars is an act of vandalism and a crime. It also looks tasteless and boring, and people shouldn't be forced to stare at it because a small minority of insufferable teenagers think it looks cool. No one is being forced to stare at graffiti on railcars any more than they are forced to...

Re: Shortlines Train Locations Updates - April 2024

46 cars…wow. As I headed west on Burton over the tracks the train was extended back into the yard near the office, so I figured it ended there. It must have been stretched much further back than I could see for that brief moment.

Re: Scenic places to railfan?

The New Richmond area is probably the most scenic area on the west side of the state if you want to shoot a CSX train, Amtrak, or a coal train.

Grand elk north through Byron Center at 4:53pm. Wamx 4124, 4190 and 14 cars. Looks like the SB train might be departing Hughart soon. Three units with a WS unit in the middle. All three are just south of Burton, headlight on lead unit. String of tank cars at the front of the train, and maybe 20-30 ...

A drunk driver did this to my left leg back in 1992. I hope your girlfriend's injuries were less critical.

Re: Railfanning in the Solar Eclipse

Yeah, I’m sure people have had rooms reserved for a few years now too. If I didn’t have to work, I’d just leave early in the morning and come back in the evening. Done that plenty of times shooting trains in Illinois and Indiana anyway. And since it’s in the middle of the day, there wouldn’t be any ...

Re: Railfanning in the Solar Eclipse

Well, it'll be easy to track the Chicago-St. Louis Amtrak trains if you want to time it just right for catching one of those during totality. Otherwise I think it would be more a matter of luck to catch a freight during that moment and in a decent location. *Edit: If you were to go to Illinois. Didn...

It seems odd that apples are shipped to Michigan at all. We grow over a million pounds per year.
Not a lot of Granny Smith apples being grown in Michigan.

You can easily, and legally, photograph trains at West Olive as they are leaving the plant. No one is going to chase you away from the Hiawatha Drive crossing. Re: Fun Friday TLU Poll

I've been interested in why CSX plays such a big role on this site. It's always got the most updates from the widest group of people on TLU and it has by far the most detailed and up to date train symbols list on the wiki. It just kind of worked out that way. Definitely wasn't intentional, I don't ...

Re: Where Is It?

Old Kelvinator plant on Clyde Park? On the track/branch that used to run from the end of the City Market spur to Burton on the GDLK(NYC). One leg ran on the west end of the property and tied into the old interurban RoW. The other ran on the east side where you can still see rail in the parking lot,...

Re: Where Is It?

Somewhere in west Michigan. Old spur running into the building probably hasn't been used in my lifetime (I'll be 57 this year). Rails are also buried in the parking lot running along the drive to the left.

I'm sure this is probably an easy one for some people here. :)
