Re: Question about Defect Detectors

Thanks. I had seen the reference of SAD on some FCC licenses and didn't know the terminology.

You don't always hear the squeal of emergency brakes at higher speeds. That train was really moving!
45 mph is the maximum timetable speed.

Re: New Amazon DC at CN Moterm (State Fairground Site)

Intermodal works best when only one railroad is involved and there is no interchange. Rubber tire interchange between a western railroad and eastern railroad my add up to $300 more in costs per unit. If you take Sat's example of 60 containers a day, well that's upwards of $15,000 extra per day the s...

Re: Pan Am RR for sale

Pan Am has seen the writing on the wall. The rail industry is terrible at thinking ahead at times and the increasingly rate of ageing boxcars has unfortunately outpaced the anemic investment in new boxcars. Half of the current fleet of boxcars is plate F with the other half (pre 90's) set on retirem...

Re: NS Peavine talk

Most of the class one railroads don’t have many places to put them either. As of Mar 1st 2020, there were over 393,000 rail cars in storage and if you coupled' em all together you would need a length of rail totaling over 4,000 miles. Of the 102,000 tank cars currently in storage, The CCET could on...

... dangerous as vandals could damage the takers I would suspect the CCET will be getting more storage here soon with tankers if this is the case. Is a railcar less likely to be vandalised on a shortline? The CCET website claims they have capacity to store over 1,000 rail cars. Not sure if that num...

Re: US Steel closing Great Lakes Works in April 2020

How about we, the U.S., commit to rebooting our infrastructure, and insist that we use steel produced in the U.S. ? With the steel tariffs U.S. manufacturers who export faced stiffer competition from forgien competitors who weren't paying U.S. tarrifs. It's the U.S. consumer who pays tariffs not th...

Re: UP has to rehire engineer who pooped on Train

This knucklehead did this even though the train restroom was only a few feet away? Imagine yourself dragging in trains and flat switching off the extra board and after 8 hours you have to clean poop from a knuckle using only bottled water and paper towels. Good luck to his fellow co-workers.

ORDC is looking into ending Z&W’s ownership if the line? Or ORDC’s ownership? Z&W leases 15 miles of track from the State of Ohio. ORDC manages the ownership of the Glass Rock line for the state. ORDC has for years kept the line “railbanked” but the prime development site on the line has been parce...

The brakes failed. Driver is out of hospital, sustained only minor injuries. The driver must have jumped at the last second because this is the roof of the truck cab. You can see the the microphone for the cb radio. I think you are right. I wonder if they will ever find out why the brakes failed. G...

Re: Bridge collapse in Toledo

While I'm certainly no expert, I can tell you this, all bridge demolitions are indeed planned. I have been around a few bridge demolitions in my time. 99% of the demolitions include the bridge landing on the ground. It doesn't matter if its water, an interstate highway or a rail line, the bridge is ...

Looks like the collapse was planned to land on the rails. There are two cranes onsite and neither has the capacity to lift any part of the bridge deck. The one crane is to small and the other crane has a pile driver attached to the boom and is to far away from the collapsed deck.

NS needs to sell the line. The new owner could re-open the 'entire line' and pull empty tanks from either end.

Re: Amtrak questions

I did eventually find this. This was a test GE did after a year of running bio. Numbers are about the same. It was noted there was an increase of 1.3% fuel consumption in DB and idle with the bio. Guess it wasn't enough to justify using bio over regular diesel.

Amtrak questions

Does Amtrak currently use bio-diesel? I was reading about the trial run of the Heartland flyer back in the day when Amtrak was a charter member of the Chicago Climate Exchange. What were the results of that test? Secondly, what percentage of the electricity used by Amtrak comes from solar and wind p...
