Re: Norfolk Southern Settlement
Norfolk Southern’s fourth quarter earnings from railway operations was in excess of $800 million AFTER taking a $150 million charge to account for costs associated with the “eastern Ohio incident “. Charges against earnings were also taken in the 3rd quarter ($163 MM), 2nd quarter ($416 MM), and the...

I drove through and stopped in Lima for about an hour last May in the early afternoon.
I caught one train on the CFE. IIRC there two other movements in town but I was not able to get a good look at what was happening.

I think the photo might have been taken at Nieman road looking SW. The pole line would have been in the right place (some poles are extant) and the tree lines look similar.

Re: Hamilton Northwestern Railroad Co.
I thought I read somewhere‘s on RailRoadFan.com that the WMI was transloading apples that were transported up to Traverse City Michigan for Gogo Squeez. So who knows what the actual range on a transload site could be. Here’s an interesting thought. If Gogo Squeez transloaded those apples from the H...

Re: CSX Pullman, MI Derailment, March 16, 1998.
Sorry for responding to this conversation very late but I’ve always wondered what happened at that curve after watching the Thornapple River Rail Series coal train chase video! Glad I was bored this morning and decided to research! And it’s nice to know there is a lot of history with this derailmen...

Well lets start with the agri traffic on the line and well start with ethanol plant in Caro and the sugar plant there too. tttleshe shuttles of ddg and ethanol should keep them very busy. The elevator at Colling is inactive at this time. Over on the Denmark Branch I can imagine that both of the sta...

I am curious why the railroad crew is waiting while the cars are being unloaded.Michael wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 7:41 amDid you see this one from 1936 of Fingerle Lumber?

I didn’t realize that “just in time” delivery existed in 1936.

Thank you for checking into it, LRF. It would have been nice if E&LS was switching the plant again bit it will have to remain a customer on my paper railroad only for now :) You have me interested. E&LS doesn't have a connection to Billerud. They would have to use trackage rights on CN. I know you ...

Do you know when AmeriGas (Petrolane) in Petoskey last used rail? Williamsburg - Transload Shed: Transload food products in boxcars or refrigerated boxcars (this may have been built during TSBY's ownership). I always wondered what that was! Thanks for providing a backstory for that shed. From Googl...

Re: Big Rapids depot write-up/railroad history
I also attended Ferris a loooong time ago. I took a great head on shot of a PNC Geep at the Maple Street crossing adjacent to the depot. Alas the print and negatives have been lost to time. The write up of the “depot history” is a bit lacking. There is a lot of railroad history in the area. A great ...

Re: Cement Post
It's just south of 76th st along GDLK near Byron Center. Could be a phone support stand maybe. Interesting find. Concrete posts were not a “standard” on the PRR, most of the drawings I have seen specify a wrought iron post. I wonder if the post may have been installed during WW2 when steel was in s...

Speaking of Terre Haute--- does anybody know where the MILW. ROADS yard was in Terre Haute? Remember reading somewhere that it was almost circular. I examined the 1941 edition of the USGS topo map. I believe the CMSt.P&P yard and shops were on the south side of town. The yard does not appear circul...

Re: Upper Peninsula Railroading
Anyone have any type of timing or schedule for the Port Inland Railroad or the mining railroad at Cedarville? I believe both are now inaccessible to the public, unless you trespass. Timing or schedule varies. The only crossing on the Port Inland Railroad (Batty Doe Lake Road) was supposedly removed...

Hopefully this bridge remodel will allow 1225 to go north to Petoskey and TC, and what I heard, more shipments could go north as well, so the possibility of new customers on the line. Sounds like a good next couple of years for business in Northern Michigan :D The bridge historically kept large PRR...
