Re: If the Rails Were Still There

I recall Shell oil took over the former Ann Arbor fuel storage facility at Elberta to store crude oil for shipment by barge. This facility was later converted to asphalt storage. There didn’t seem to be much opposition to Shell’s facility since the AA tanks were already in place.

Re: New Connection in New Buffalo AMTK.

I am confused by this project. The document released by the City of New Buffalo indicates that the long term plan is to change the Pere Marquette service to a Holland- Grand Rapids - Kalamazoo route (see Fiqure 5). If that is planned (I think that makes a lot sense), why spend the money on the New ...

Re: Frankfort Question

The inbound mechanical refrigerators were fruits from the west. When the ferries operated they would come over on the ferry and go directly to the plant. I'm still suspect that they received fish oil but I may be wrong :? I am inclined to agree with you. I would expect a vegetable oil or palm oil o...

Re: Frankfort Question

More importantly, what was Pet Milk doing with fish oil? Unfortunately the article's author, Harry Cook, died in 2017. Absent input from Pet Milk veterans or those familiar with its processes, who knows? Maybe Cook named the wrong product. I briefly looked up industrial uses of fish oil, but the re...

Re: GR & I Depot Petosky

I stopped by the depot today on my way north today. The entire upper section of the south gable wall collapsed. I could not see how much damage the roof below received due to the plastic sheet installed to enclose the hole. I did not notice any damage to the hotel. There were a number of large trees...

Another factor is the rapid demise of coal fired power plants. With less coal being hauled for power more shipping capacity is available.

Re: Feds crack train heist involving new Detroit vehicles, b

The Detroit news article leads me to think this was an inside job.

This could be bad news for railfans. This event could lead to increased “security” around rail yards.

Re: Sunken Steam Engine near Houghton Lake, MI

There were a number of logging lines in the Merritt area. I don’t have a list or map to consult. This area was logged later than most. Merritt hosted a large mill complex into the 1920s. The GR&I branch to Merritt was abandoned in the late 1930s IIRC. The story seems a bit fantastic. First, locomoti...

Re: Rails on the Road

When the railroad wants to assure something arrives on time they ship by truck.
Cars in company service are treated as low priority and often are the first to be left behind when a train’s locomotives hit their tonnage limit.

The project is on schedule in the design phase.

The Construction Manager/ General Contractor (Kiewit) has been selected and will participate in the design of the project.

I believe construction is planned for 2021.
