Amtrak vs. Truck
Got a message from a friend back home (we’re in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for spring break) that a truck got out in front of Amtrak and failed to clear the crossing, getting whacked by P3771 at/near 64th street west of Hudsonville. No injuries were reported, but have no other details about it yet...ma...

Re: UP - CSX Merger Speculation
I do not think that the government would allow UP and CSX to merge. That would be a huge monopoly. Ahhh....no it wouldn't be, as there are 2 more class 1"s, which, if they also merged, would create a DUOPOLY, not a monopoly. There would still be competition, as the 2 (sets of) mergers (BNSF+NS/UP+C...

23 ft. Baja hit the bridge. AT SPEED. Drugs, Alcohol and Speed were said to be factors...also enter STUPID into the equation... ...blind....you could also add blind.....cause how do you miss THAT big an obstacle?! Re: J H Campbell coal plant Port Sheldon
Update from a friend that works at Campbell. The SW1200 and slug are broken and they haven't fixed them because they hate using them. The 2 axle engines don't see much use because they also hate using them. They currently dump all of the trains with their 110 Ton GE Switcher. I was driving right by...

Re: Pedestrian Hit By GDLK Train in Kalamazoo Yesterday.
No, I was struck by an autorack on a shoving move. Ahh, ok, so it's not the same situation as someone walking along the tracks while a locomotive approaches them with the horn blaring. Got it. I recall the old hats from 20+ yrs ago, telling us to always remember..."if you're on the wood, you're no ...

Re: CP trackage rights over CSX Michigan and Ohio
There weren't any trackage rights, but haulage rights existed on the PM, via Grand Rapids. This is evident, due to the fact that CSX crews being used to move the trains between Detroit and Chicago, not CP's crews. When CP approached CSX about running their trains on the PM (due to a bridge being out...

Do you, or your sources, know if these trains will go thru G.R., via the West Olive crews, again?SD80MAC wrote:Done deal. LSRC and CSX will have the Essexville coal through the end of the life of the plant, another 2 or 3 years IIRC. Supposed to switch over from CN/HESR very soon.

I am not really sure who told you that one, but that cant be further from the truth. Injectors are a common wear item, and top out around 200$ each. - He who has run plenty of large engines out of fuel, taken the diesel bath getting the fuel back, and never once had to replace injectors because of ...

Re: CN Local rescue mission
It is a tad more complicated then just filling up the ol' fuel tank and starting a unit if it goes empty. You have to disassemble the fuel filters and fill those again and prime the pumps....at least that was the practice some years back..... Something to add to Doc's assessment & experiences...The...

If you're going by boat to Toledo like you describe, why wouldn't you just go by boat all the way to Chicago? Or am I missing something? Remember, you're in Michigan (pronounced M-i-t-t-e-n) and in wintertime, the norther portion of the lakes would often freeze over completely, as was common during...

Re: Fuller Jct. Signal Identification
I've been railfanning around Fuller Jct, or Ann St. as you would call it in Grand Rapids, Michigan, near Walker, MI for a few years now. Having the Grand Rapids Eastern cross CSX right after their yard, they have to have some sort of signals. The signals are a double-headed US&S searchlight signal....

Amtrak hits flatbed truck at Clark rd. on N.S.
An Amtrak train from Port Huron hit a loaded steel-coil flatbed truck yesterday around 12:45. Was told by dispatcher to approach the Clark rd. crossing at restricted speed and he didn't specify why, which is unusual. As we passed under the CN bridge at Pine, we saw numerous flashing lights (mostly y...

.... Maybe when they are at it they can replace the cross-buck that has been missing at Beverly Ave since May! The cross-buck is the responsibility of the state to replace/repair, not CSX...they must decide when they'r going to replace it, as there are, obviously, no electrical circuits invol...

This is the first I heard of the accident. Wonder what happened? I know they've been working on this segment to build it up. Look at the first picture. It appeared the rail snapped. This could be the case since most, if not all of the Middleton Branch has rail lighter than 100 lbs. I suspect harmon...

Re: NS Derailment Adrian
Not only did they run through a derail, they did so at a significant enough speed to flip the locomotive and derail several cars before it was all over. Someone wasn't doing their required lookin'. ....must have overrun their intended route in this pass, as the switch was not lined for the move.......
