Re: Amtrak Ops

One could also say that seat belts don't prevent all traffic fatalities, but it's still advisable to wear one. A key reason we wear masks is to minimize situations like the following. These aren't fake patients or fake symptoms:Screenshot_20201027-092859.png Excellent analogy. With citizenship and ...

Electronic bell not mounted at the top of the pole. Don't think I've ever seen it done that way before. The N. Center Street crossing mp CG60.35 in Bangor, Michigan has their electronic bell installed like that. I’ve been seeing more and more crossings done this way. My best guess is so that they a...

Re: Amtrak Ops

Any idea when Amtrak might get back to a full schedule on the Michigan Line? Been wanting to take my 3 year old on a short out and back ride but I can’t keep him occupied for 12 hours somewhere waiting for a return trip. At this point, given Amtrak's stance on Long Distance trains, and the state an...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: October, 2020.

We'll probably be seeing D705-25 sometime today. Q326 was talking to Rouge Tower around 1pm about yarding his train & power and had asked if there was anything expected to be coming in & Rouge had replied D705 was doubling up his train there in Detroit as they were speaking. D706/D906 ended up in D...

Re: Deshler Tower

Station should have been torn down in 2002 after it was hit by that derailing coal train. What an eyesore. Deshler should do some form of contract with CSX to keep the tower in any event as a monument to their town’s history. Not super hard to maintain that structure even if CSX doesn’t want to. See...

Re: Why run a short train?

A big component of PSR is balancing crews and locomotives. So it runs anyway. If you don’t run Q327 today you still have to pay a crew to cab to Chicago, and lose 48 hours of locomotive time. Might as well run the power to keep the balance, and you have to pay the crew anyway.

Re: UP - CSX Merger Speculation

A round of east-west mergers would maintain the existing regional duopoly, while increasing cross traffic between east and west. Right now, the railroads don't want to shorthaul themselves. This prevents potential intermodal lanes in particular, like KC-DET, which might open up if it were one railro...

Ahh yeah, who cares. Most railroaders know what railfans are and that they pose no threat. As somebody who has had Class One Railroad “Security” training, the key is suspicious. Somebody with a big DSLR or camcorder on a tripod, doing nothing otherwise illegal, will not arouse suspicion. Honestly wh...

Re: Wyoming Yard wye

They do still use it. It's called the cinder pit wye. The reason it doesn't see as much use any more is that it's not as convenient. Power for the road trains is usually parked in front of the tower any more. Getting at the cinder pit wye from the tower requires handling a lot of extra switches and...

Is that wht 3008 and mates were tied up in Grant on Sunday. Or do they always tie up there? Made for a colorful fall scene coming down M-37.
Not sure what 3008 is but they will often tie up anywhere between Newaygo and Sparta on the weekends.
MQT 3408 maybe?

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: October, 2020.

The signals in South Lyon were probably dropped to allow for a MOW EC1 track authority. Sounds like the RN Dispatcher lined up D706 wayyyy early and then had to knock the signals back down to get somebody track time. Pretty safe bet that you’ll never see D706 in South Lyon until 2-3 hours after they...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: October, 2020.

Hey I'm out in south lyon. Is D705 headed my way today? Per Can't Be Shook's post at 10:21 this morning, D705 is planned for 3p out of Detroit. So I'd say you should expect D705 in South Lyon no earlier than 6p. It usually takes at least two hours to build a train of D705's typical length and then ...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates, September 2020

Is it correct that no train goes through SOut Lyon on Sunday? D705 and D706 do not run on Sundays. To confirm, D706 is supposed to be Mon, Wed, Fri and D705 is supposed to be Tue, Thu, Sat. These trains are GRP-based crews, so if D706 runs late to Detroit, D705 will be late coming back since it is ...
