Re: CN puts Wisconsin-Michigan-Ontario lines up for sale

Interesting to me that CN is keeping the line up to Baraga, but will sell the line to Munising CN has fairly close ties (no pun intended) to the place up there that burns ties for electric generation. I believe they send most if not all of their ties removed in the US to them, if not some from Cana...

Re: Amtrak Wolverine Full Service Resuming?

Has anyone heard if/when Amtrak will be resuming the 6 trains between Pontiac and Chicago? If there isn’t enough demand today, I find it hard to believe the demand will ever come back. People and companies are fleeing high cost cities like Chicago, so the demand to go to Chicago has likely been sig...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates - April 2021

Doesn't sound like it "optimized" then. Bet that just frustrates the heck out of the operating crew. Something designed to help operations made a routine slug up the hill a much longer affair; probably with a lot of extra steps in the damp wet night for the conductor. I'm guessing the (experienced)...

Re: CN puts Wisconsin-Michigan-Ontario lines up for sale

Current Munising Line CN operations are based out of Newberry, right? One day round trip to Trout Lake, the next round trip to Munising, etc.? I suppose the small yard in Trout Lake is set up well enough for good interchange with another operator on the branch. CN then will only access Soo, Ontario...

Hmm.. no grand elk Tuesday in Byron Center, none so far today. Did see a large box truck inspecting the rails (similar to Sperry) and a grand elk pickup truck right behind it, heading north around 1pm. Given what you posted recently about slow movements and short trains through your back yard, My s...

Re: Amtrak's Goals

I thought the ideal was for Amtrak to become profitable like Conrail back in the day. Silly me!! Well, at least the Chicago to Detroit corridor will get more attention. Nobody makes money hauling people. It’s a service. The airlines do, but it’s a unique mix of critical mass, major cities and being...

Re: Amtrak's Goals

So I gather you're ok with also cutting subsidies to roads, buses, airports, seaports and canal locks? Fuel taxes alone don't begin to cover the full cost of maintaining highways. Ah, a happy taxpayer. The price of existing in society. Amtrak itself has been underfunded for years on end. If the fed...

D707 does not run to Grand Rapids anymore and hasn't for some time. The farthest west they go is Lake Odessa.
Good to know...I hadn't heard of a GR turn in awhile now and that makes sense now that 705/706 are handling the pickup/setouts at Lansing.

D702 is only Holland to Grand Rapids. D705/706 are starting to settle into a daily routine, I would check the Train Location Updates Threads to get a feel for it. D707 still operates west of Lansing as far as GR and D708 operates eastwards as far as South Lyon. Again the TLUs will give you up-to-da...
