Re: IORY - Delta, OH

I've seen nothing to indicate that the NS/I&O connection is going back in. There's not really a need for it either.

Are they going to be reinstalling access between the IORY yard and NS or just extending the stub tracks father west in the yard?

Re: Single-tracking NS in Mansfield OH

https://1812blockhouse.com/business-politics/norfolk-southern-petitions-to-lower-capacity-on-rail-line-through-mansfield/ Says 32.6 miles of track taken out of service, but it doesn't clarify the beginning & end points. As for traffic being down, that is definitely the case. In Conrail days going fr...

Re: Tontogany, OH

Now that M209 has been re-profiled to originate at Wayne Michigan, it generally operates via Fostoria. As for how many could operate via Bates, in the early/mid 2000's 15 to 18 trains a day were the norm. The closure of Stanley yard was the leading factor in the decrease to what you see today. To me...

Re: Napolean, Defiance & Western Railraod

Best thing to do is to either start at Woodburn, Defiance or Napoleon, and just follow the line from whichever point you start at. Also, the days of "world's worst railroad" are well in the rearview mirror now thanks to the various programs to upgrade the track.

Here's the docket# for the decision to discontinue service east of the Napoleon Bypass back in 2016.

Re: Underrated Ohio Railfanning Locations

Myself, I like Millbury and Wauseon for the NS Chicago line. On the CSX side of things, I usually split time between Deshler and Hamler - that's "home turf" after all!

Re: GLC getting rid of alco trucks!?

I could see why they'd want to; they do take more damage in a derailment than a "Blomberg" truck does, and component availability has to be tougher than for the "Blomberg" type. That being said, I don't know how different the bore on the pivot point is (if it is) and so on, so it may be cost prohibi...

Re: New 86' Box Car?

I would suspect that if there is still a need for 86' cars to be in service in the upcoming years, that some will go through the "life extension program" that can get them to 65 years. One is already starting to see quite a few flatcars that are used in autorack service that have been done. These ar...

Re: Future of the Plymouth Sub/Grand Rapids Sub

I guess the bigger question is, why is there the expectation that the line should be more than what it is now? Especially if Consumers Power gets the approval to completely close the West Olive power plant by 2025.

Re: Michigan line

Last year, for a little bit NS did run a train around the northwest connection at Butler. Apparently, they no longer do so. How they negotiated that with CP, I do not know. One thing to consider with intermodal traffic, is that Detroit is an easy dray from any of the Chicago terminals, with the adde...

Re: IORY (Delta, Metamora & Michigan operations)

The elevator in Metamora will still ship out grain trains, but not nearly to the extent that it did prior to being purchased by the Anderson's. For trains going to destinations on CSX, the empties are handed off to IORY at Cairo and the CSX power stays with the train. The elevator uses a former GTW ...

Re: Deshler Northwest Wye Removal?

I don't see them removing the wye - too much of a hassle for signals etc. But continuing on with the current path of very sporadic use. The loaded BNSF coal trains that turn at Fostoria would be a natural to run via Bates, except there's no place between Perry and Walbridge that they can be refueled...

Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread

I can't imagine them using the old Cincinnati Northern roadbed north of Cecil. Yes, the roadbed does exist, but the roads into town would take a beating from whatever trucks that would load/unload there. I'd think it'd make much more sense to be near either 127 or old 24 somewhere. For what it's wor...

Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread

The focus has been west of Defiance, but that part was always worse than east of Defiance to Napoleon. Of more importance than the 25 mph speed is the ability to handle 286K cars and dropping the number of derailments. As for east of 24, that part was harvested for rail etc. for use on the rest of t...

Re: NS’ Stanley yard

For what it's worth, the track on the hump was removed a while back. Anderson's rail car owns the old engine house and does freight car repairs there and there is a company (it may be part of J-Star's operations I'm not 100% sure) that unloads vehicle frames and line sequences them before loading on...

Imlay City?

I noticed that there's a viewing platform at Imlay City. While these aren't usually my thing, I have been looking a smaller town along the CN west of Port Huron to spend a day sometime. With that in mind, what is the traffic like east of Durand these days?

Re: Napoleon, Defiance and Western: The Definitive Thread

I'd also think that stick rail might be more appropriate for the type of repairs they're trying to do. Lets say for example the rebuild area is a mix of 90 and 110 lb rail. They may chose to focus on the 90, and keep the 110 (for now) and then get the 110 as part of the next round of improvements. C...

There hasn't been any interchange business at Leipsic for a long time. In theory they could, but the established locations are a lot easier.

I'm sure CP has been offered the line a few times - and their lack of response says all one needs to know.

The CP was offered the line a couple of years ago. They had no interest in it, however the talks did result in the haulage trains Q166/Q165. Long story short, it is a railfan fantasy.
