Re: New Route to South Bend Airport for South Shore.
Their ridership statistics are behind, but when published they break out ridership to South Bend.
Construction affected the ridership numbers. Busing for the Double Track project ended in April with new trains added in May.- Tue Dec 03, 2024 12:43 am

Re: Michigan City Coaling Tower to be demolished in 2025
As long as steel and concrete contract and expand at the same rate when heated and cooled there should be no problems.

Re: South Shore Double Track
The rebuilt 11th Street station has two high-level platforms (which is a good thing), but only one of them is long enough for 8-car trains, and the other one can only fit 4 cars. In essence, they now have to route long trains to only one platform on only one track. Why? There was enough space to bu...

Re: South Shore Double Track
Yuri Popov, physics professor and transit enthusiast, has published his analysis on the state of the South Shore. His conclusions aren’t flattering, and true to his style, he pulls no punches. How to spend $650 million and make things worse as a result… Truth teller or polemicist? Without doing my ...

Re: GDLK Operations
What is the control method north of the signal system into Kzoo? Track warrant? Yard limits? In the NS days at least, it was Form D territory. Various block stations exist which delineate non signaled blocks from Park all the way up to Hughart in Grand Rapids. I think Z man actually has one near hi...

Take a look at the map you posted. Just northwest of the bridge is a line between the NYC and the B&O.

Re: GDLK Operations
FWIW, the old signal at CP 421 on the Kalamazoo branch was also a Type G, dating from when 421 was modernized also around 1960. As noted, it is now replaced. Considering the complete rebuild of CP 421 I would have been disappointed if any signal survived. The Kalamazoo Branch signal was moved west ...

Re: GDLK Operations
NS left tri-lights up at Butler Indiana (if I recall correctly) while replacing tri-lights everywhere else along the Chicago Line and Marion Branch (as far as Warsaw). The Marion Branch still had position lights north of Warsaw. The position lights survive in Marion (except the dwarf). It looks like...

Re: GDLK Operations
Watco petitioned the STB a few years ago for the removal of signals from Three Rivers south. The petition was denied. Watco ended up replacing all of the signals south of Three Rivers. I'm not sure why they didn't replace Park and Cowling. CP 99 became CP 1 When NS replaced the signal as part of the...

Re: CP Christmas Train
Maybe once Ford has built out the park or whatever it's doing behind the MC Depot, the train can stop there. CPKC owns the line as far as 24th St. I suppose if they can stop a few miles apart in Cambridge and then Ayr on the 24th they could make one stop on each side of the river. The people on the...

Re: Fort Wayne Secondary/Gary Branch
What you are apparently not understanding is that there are two separate lines from Tolleston to the northwest. One owned by CSX and one owned by NS. The NS line ends at the CN City Track at the northwest end and the CSX line on the southeast end at Tolleston. CSX' line continues past the CN line. I...

Re: Fort Wayne Secondary/Gary Branch
The connection was built to allow NS access from the Porter Branch to their line ending at CN Kirk Yard when NS abandoned the east/west portion of the Sugar Track. Years ago I (after the reconstruction) would see NS trains on that link. I don't visit that part of town often. CSX does not travel nort...

Re: Fort Wayne Secondary/Gary Branch
There was an ownership swap north of the river. Purple line is former CSX (track out of service) transferred to the airport. Yellow line is former NS transferred to CSX. Green line is track transferred to NS now ending at CN's City Track. GaryRailTransfer1.jpg At Tolleson the red line was the former...

Re: Fort Wayne Secondary/Gary Branch
The former NS alignment was transferred to CSX north of the river and the NS moved east. Both to provide additional distance from the airport runways. Look north of the river for the shift. Near Tolleston the NS line to the east was removed and the line now merges into the CSX track then follows the...
