CSX Intermodal Question
Being in Michigan, I typically post on the Michigan board but considering the location of the question in mind, I thought I'd post here: Traveling from the Upper Peninsula to North Carolina, I passed through Ohio and was assuming I was relatively close to the North Baltimore intermodal terminal cons...

Michigan TOFC
Out of the intermodal terminals in Detroit, which Class I intermodal terminals operate TOFC (trailer on flatcar) in addition to their COFC and stack trains?
Thank you in advance.

Re: WATCO Makes Investment in GLC
I think everyone should look back and see what TSB is saying (and I should as well). Now, let's identify the difference between GLC being BOUGHT and GLC being invested in by WATCO. Probably the best way to go about it is to answer several questions to get a better understanding: 1. What will change/...

Re: WATCO Makes Investment in GLC
The merging and cooperation between Federated and WATCO is a little bit bigger than most of you may think. Yes, the same traffic would be interchange at Osmer, but interchange costs would be reduced or eliminated. Rail transportation costs increase as more railroads (particularly short lines) are ad...

I know that Lake State just recently got a new marketing director. I am unsure what happened to Mark Nagy.

Re: Lake State Railway at East Tawas, MI
Just talked to Michigan Gypsum owner, Sargent Sand Co. MI Gypsum no longer ships to Alpena (or elsewhere for that matter) by rail from Turtle. They are actively looking for places to ship by rail because of the savings.

Re: Confusion on Abandonment
The only public announcement of interest was Brown City to Port Huron by the the grain elevator companies in the area and the MABA president. Additionally, I encourage EVERYONE on this board/thread to listen to the Panel Discussion from the MI Rail Conference. The link is below. Since MTU organized ...

Re: Confusion on Abandonment
I'm not saying that DA Glass is the only place that would ship by rail nor that is should be the only place looked at for reactivated service. However, there interest from this company to ship by rail and are willing to use it, whether it is direct service or transloading. Rail reactivation is a tre...

Re: Confusion on Abandonment
Rail service implementation depends in the volume. Look at MR: the benefits of direct rail for the new mine were better than trainload, even though construction is an added cost. It depends on the volume. I have heard a great deal about DA Glass shipping out ridiculously large volumes (sorry, can ca...

Re: Confusion on Abandonment
The Bay City branch would not be eligible because the entire linear property may not be continuous. Groups like Rail-to-Trails who manage rail banked trails are required to give up the corridor for rail. However, if they manage non rail banked lines, they are not required to give up the land to the ...

Re: Confusion on Abandonment
Rail corridors that have been removed from service are tricky to understand. I am a student at Michigan Tech's Rail Program and have been doing a lot of research on abandoned rail corridors. I understand this pretty well but, like I said, it is tricky. Out of service: sometimes go through the STB an...

AARR,
Do you have any further information about said project in the 1990s? Were there any published documents, news articles or filing that I might be able to find?
Please advise and thanks in advance.

Driving back to MTU and noticed a few happenings: Mineral Range is really moving on the track reactivation. There was active work on grading the line with some equipment moving down the line. No track yet but it looks like they are close to starting, at least where I crossed the rail trail. Any new ...

How did the Michigan railcar ferries "work"?
Here is a question that has always puzzled me: When the railcar ferries were still in operation (Mackinaw City, Ludington, Elberta),how was freight way billed for the shipper/receiver connection? Since the railcars ferries were in service to bypass railroad bottlenecks near Chicago, would the shippe...

With all the talk about the Alpena operations, what happened to the operations north Alpena? I know the track to Rogers City and Hawks was removed in 2001 but what were the reasons? I can see why the track from Rogers City Jct. to Hawks would be abandoned and removed (business not steady enough, can...
