Re: Belt Railway of Chicago info
http://www.beltrailway.com/ The BRoC is a go between the railroads, I believe now it is multi-owned by the serving railroads but maintains its unique operation. They have hump yards sorting off cars for routing beyond. I would have to believe any train move is done as a technically extra, as the mov...

Re: South Shore Electric Vs. Diesel
multiple powered wheels can accellerate much faster than a diesel pulled train, this is critical for on time operation with many stops. As noted SS handled a lot of bridge traffic, this was true for a lot of electrified interurbans. Now SS can do terminal to terminal. They own their own freight traf...

Re: Waterloo Frequency
Waterloo is the mainline between New York and Chicago of the New York Central/PennCentral/Conrail/NS. It has always been a train watchers hot bed. They fly thru Waterloo full speed. We used to train watch at the Waterloo station in the late 60's. Shot some film then on 8mm. Since there were crossove...

Re: South Shore Electric Vs. Diesel
During the steam era downtown trains were smothering the area with smoke, the city ordered electrification, so the IC electrified. South Shore has always been electric and has trackage rights on the IC. Diesels emit fumes, so that does not bode well for running into mellenium station. The proposed e...

Re: Say goodbye to the CTC on Watco north of Elkhart.
They might want to avoid PTC, which might be why the move, they could still do automatic block signals for protection but works (ed) for the South Shore.

Re: NYC tracks past Central Station
There was a complex of freight terminal trackage north of there, the South Water street terminal, NKP, NYC (Michigan Central ) used these areas, I am modeling this area. Slowly the area was being cleared, I don't know who whats when, but there may be residual trackage from all of this today. I'll po...

Re: South Shore Derailment, Michigan City.
I'm just a messenger, I presume one of the switches works the interchange with the NKP and may not had ever had any interlocking applied, perhaps a simple ground throw, but as noted the dispatcher does not have indication of the turnout, you have to visually look at the turnout.

Re: South Shore Derailment, Michigan City.
I just learned more how it happenned. My father attended the NICTD meeting, crews were readying the 8 car train to South Bend, engineer in east end, conductor on west end. There were multiple facets that contributed to the accident. The train was pulling out of the usual yard exit westbound, enginee...

Re: Former VGN/NH/CR E33 heading to IRM
The E33 have a GE 752 motor, rated at 750 volts...ironically. You would have to look at the controls and wiring and see where you could patch in. But they have pantagrapghs. IRM had pan friendly overhead switches, but were removed. They ran the Little Joe and were dropping pans over the switches. I ...

the plan is to use hybrid electric/diesel engines, I'd rather they fully electrify keeping everything compatible, the issue may be cost to electrify, but maybe the decision isnt fully made yet.

we used to hang out at the Waterloo station watching trains, have some films shot of that, plus NYC trains stopping there, run over to Buds and grab a Malt. With no Ft Wayne train service people have to scramble to Kendalville and Waterloo to nab trains. Far as I know the Ft Wayne station is still t...

Re: Ore dock question
Ironically I am building an ore dock for my layout, it has 2 tracks but does not matter which track they dump into as it falls into the same ramp, the bottom has a swingable ramp which can be raised and lowered, and probably swings the load close or far depending on its position to spread across the...

Re: New board of Directors at Southern Michigan Railroad!
I kinda followed this story on another forum (RYPN) not familiar with the "whomever " wanting to take over the line, but they went in and dug into the politics of the museum group to try to aquire it. And then it ends up in courtroom battles. I can see the undercutting here going on to take the muse...
