Re: Grand Trunk Autorack Question

There was also a variation of Blue panels, with the yellow "trailer Train" flatcar. Not near as common as the others, but I do recall seeing them on a few occasions.

Re: Question about Defect Detectors

TSA, as far as I know, is just different terminology-Track Side Analyzer. NS calls theirs TSA's, but I'm thinking they are pretty much the same Hotbox and/or dragging equipment detector installations. SAD is Stand Alone Detector. NS has gone to some of these installations, but around here (NW Ohio) ...

The situation in Sidney- The East-West tracks on the south side of town is the CCC&STL,NYC/PC/CR "Bee Line" main to Indianapolis. The North South line is the B&O Toledo Subdivision. The other East/West line in town is the original main line of the CCC&STL which went down through the middle of town a...

Re: Southern RR low nose motive power

The Southern Railway purchased nothing with a low hood, clear to the Norfolk Southern Merger. Their last new locomotives in Southern paint were the GP50's, I believe. Norfolk Southern purchased SD60's sublettered for the Southern, but they were delivered in NS paint. When the Southern absorbed the o...

Leipsic Junction Tower

When did the Tower at Leipsic Junction get demolished? I was there about six weeks ago on my company's delivery truck, and thought it was gone. I have seen no mention of its demise on any of the railroad sites I frequent, and I started to think maybe I had just missed it. I was there again yesterday...

Re: Railroad Name on 1918 Draft Registration Card

Glad to help!

I've looked at a lot of old railroad paper over the years. Definitely has helped in being able to read older handwriting styles.

Let us know what you find.

Sure looks like T&OC to me. The "O" has a little overlap at the top.
Any knowledge if he had worked for the Toledo and Ohio Central at some point?

Re: Nichols Tower-Battle Creek

"Nasby" Tower on Toledo's West side had an incinerating toilet as well. During a visit up there, the operator told me "If you gotta take a dump, put newspaper on the bottom of the bowl. When you're done, throw it out into the weeds. Last time someone fired it up, it reeked for three days in here!". ...

Wonderful Photos! Looks like you had good weather. Not to nitpick, but the Control Point at Cresson is "MO". "UN" is on the Westbound side at Gallitzin. First time I was there at "MO", the tower was open and the Eastbound signals were on the jumpover bridge (1992). By the time I made it back, the si...

Re: Location of Indiana Eastern's locos

Last fall, I hyrailed the Indiana Eastern. At Cottage Grove, just north of the diamond, there is an Enginehouse for them. I saw a unit in the house, and one outside on the lead to it. I would venture to guess that is where they are normally kept. I didn't notice anyplace else on the line that looked...

Alright. I've not been to Oak Harbor, but I do frequent Deshler and have been to Fostoria after dark. I used to go to Bryan a lot, but haven't really done that since it became NS (just because I got tired of the drive).

How is the nighttime lighting at Oak Harbor? I'm not a picture or video taker, just a watcher.

Re: How busy was the B&O before the Conrail split?

"Deviating from the B&O discussion." Yeah, sorry. I thought about that when I typed my reply, too. I've been going to Deshler from about 1990 to the present. Every scanner or radio I've had has typically had a range from about Fostoria to Defiance, reliably. Before the "unmerger", it was pretty comm...

Re: How busy was the B&O before the Conrail split?
With CR having a near monopoly on Chicago-New England traffic, can the same be said for Penn Central and NYC before it?
Absolutely not. The Conrail of 1985 to 1999 was very different from the CR/PC/NYC+PRR before it West of Cleveland. Why? Until about 1976, the traffic levels on Penn...

Re: Proposed Passenger Rail from Chicago to Columbus, OH.

If we could somehow ignore the obvious problems setting it up, lets assume it is already there. Who is going to ride it? Will Joe Public from Columbus ride the train to Chicago, get dropped off and have to depend on public (not free) transportation, or will he drive the distance and still be able to...

Re: Toledo, Lake Erie & Western (TLEW)

The T&LEW will not probably see freight service for like 20 years Because the tracks are SO OLD. What kind of freight service would they provide? Are there any on-line customers? If so, does their business even come close to paying to keep it alive? Don't get me wrong, I am all for at least keeping...

I'm not sure who the car with Conrail decals is, but the Conrail Hyrail truck hasn't been to Deshler since last fall. The last two weeks, it's been helping me move to another home anyway. I've almost always sat in the opposite corner anyway. I railfan mostly at night, and I feel there's better light...

Re: Toledo Sub CPLs

Some of us old heads remember when the line north of Deshler was embargoed back in the 1990's. There was, at that time, some serious consideration of abandoning the line north of Haskins. With three lines into Toledo, all arriving at basically The same location, one has to wonder the logic of havin...

Re: Near Collision in Fostoria

The Fostoria Newspaper had an article about it (online). Of all people, they spoke to Ellen. Anyone familiar with this woman is probably rolling their eyes as they read this. Anyhow, she stated "this is the second close call since they closed the tower" and suggests of all things, getting the Govern...
