Short Line Updates August 2020

08:40 it looked like a MQT crew was knocking the handbrakes off (or locking them down?) the northbound train north of Grant at the Nelson’s Farm crossing with 3 SD40-2s and probably 40-50 cars of mixed freight. By 11:15, a train was switching out cars in Baldwin. 3389 and 2043 were staged on the Sag...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: August, 2020.

179 cars ought to have tied up the east side of holland for a bit while they took their slow side trip into the yard!

We were eastbound on Chicago Dr and passed them making good time in Hudsonville, while a couple fans were bailing out of a car for photos near EE Hudsonville.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: July, 2020

16:15, Q326 clear Hudsonville with power and consist as described. One coil right behind the power. Yesterday, D702 switched Zeeland, pulling the two centerbeams from Zeeland Lumber and swapping one BNSF covered hoppers for another at Vanden Bosch feed. The one currently on the siding 471218, is spo...

INER at South Milford and MSO history in Michigan

Mackinac Mac and I learned that the Indiana Northeastern was planning to load a grain train at the South Milford Elevator this past Friday, July 24 at the western end of the remains of Wabash's old 4th District. He lives in Toledo and I was coming from west Michigan, so it was kind of like meeting i...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: July, 2020

20:30: Q326 approaching Tippy Cow! Loooong train, 6 coils right up front, probably from Arlington. Holland cars looked to be sprinkled throughout. Faded BN green covered hoppers in the mix. If they did indeed setout at Holland, I wonder if there are other Holland bound cars that ended up scattered i...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: July, 2020

Late report: Last week Thursday, D702 spotted BNSF covered hopper 472827 for unloading at Vanden Bosch Feed in zeeland. It stayed there all weekend and may have been picked up today. Or not! Other Zeeland sidings were empty over the weekend.

Re: New CSX ST70AH at track speed!

Thanks guys! I could have opted for the closer in angle closer to the tracks but decided for the video to go with this wider view so you can see the train coming around the corner at the next crossing up and get a better view of the variety of cars in the consist. Jon, you're right! Maybe Barr will ...

Re: Graphic Packaging White Piegon

I made it to White Pigeon yesterday expecting to see the old paper mill shuttered and quiet. Things are definitely ramping down but it looks like production did extend beyond the planned June 30 closure date. I expect these are probably the final two loads of kaolin delivered to the 100 year old pla...

New CSX ST70AH at track speed!

CSXT's small class of ten ST70AH units are only a few months old. One of the first of the class to make it to Michigan was #8907, which led train Q327 west on July 17. Enjoy this video at EE Wells near Fennville as it hauls by with a lengthy train!

Re: Jonesville Customers

I have access to three different series of aerial images at work and all three, from the past couple years, show cars on the Jonesville Omnisource spur. I'm pretty sure it's still an active customer for INER. Here's a photo of their spur, which cannot easily be seen from a road. This was taken from ...

11:50: D702 East at milepost 19 with CSXT slug 2387 and GP40-2 6987. They just picked up one covered hopper from Plastcore and are taking it along with two boxcars to Grand Rapids. This is the first time I've ever seen them switch Plastcore, although I know it happens because cars occasionally arriv...

Re: Downriver/Wayne County operations

This is based on what I’ve read and seen elsewhere: Pandemic has reduced train counts And with Great Lakes Steel now closed that has impacted car counts as well. River sub is down to the single CN local job each way with the Great Lakes Steel shut down. I’ve heard early evening is still a busier tim...

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: July, 2020

Also, as a follow up, there is a rail train tied down at East Saugatuck, facing west, right at the crossing. CSXT 4409 is the sole power and would make a great photo. As of 10:00 m of w is making a lot of noise just west of the New Richmond bridge with equipment on the rail.

Re: CSX Train Location Updates: July, 2020

That second unit on X326 is actually 8907, one of those new ST70AH units. It will be facing forward tomorrow but prior practice suggests it won’t lead 327.

15:20: Q326 clearing up 8th Street in Holland to make its Waverly setout. Fairly short train today. 5226 and 5478 for power. Edit: 15:35: 326 was routed into Waverly but didn’t do any work and is now exiting the yard heading for Grand Rapids at 120th. Crew shirt on time? 🤷‍♂️ Earlier, Q327 west at B...
