Re: ADBF & AA Grain Trains

It's been a while, but early afternoon used to be a good time to catch ADBF east of Adrian. Depending on how much time to have to snoop around, it's usually obvious when NS has dropped off a unit train as there are hoppers the whole way up the interchange track, even past Beecher Street sometimes. T...

Last I saw it was in the shop in Adrian.

Re: Gap in a rail

Yes. Definitely a broken rail. Picture could have been taken from the field side of the track also. From that angle? Only if he was 50ft up in the air. Field side means "not in the gauge/fouling the track" I know, from the angle of the shot, he would have to be very high up to be outside the gauge.

Re: NS Michigan Line Train Symbols

West end: B16- Jackson based local B22- Jackson based local B44- Jackson based local (switches jiffy in Chelsea as needed) B33- Jackson-Kalmazoo turn A quick note on a few of these for those interested. B16 is the Albion local and leaves Jackson reliably between 2-3pm, usually a little before 2:30....

Re: SMRS

I'm sure I know the answer to this, but I will ask the question anyways: Why doesn't the SMRS store some tank cars like the AA on the Saline branch? They could put some on the southern end that is still connected to the ADBF. Would help raise some funds. The idea has come up before, there's a numbe...

Re: Pittsfield Township Residents are displeased with the AA

Were TV cameramen trespassing? Kinda looks like they were. They may have obtained permission to get those close up shots when they contacted WATCO Hello yes we would like permission to go on your property without any safety knowledge or supervision to do a negative story about your company, is that...

Re: NS Jackson Power

I just call them wide cabs, works for me! On a semi related note. A good spot to watch whats happening in the Jackson yard is to duck into the Blue Moon Cafe parking lot. One can usually see most of the locomotives in the yard and it's a good spot to watch the crews kick cars. There's a few picnic t...

Re: West Michigan RR Abandonment Petition Coming

My understanding from a few things I have heard, the haircut the WMRR got was a little to short for the new owners liking. There was a quote being sought for relaying rail at one point, which may play into why the crossings are all in limbo. Why pioneer would pull rail just to have the next guy put ...

Jackson Observations

I was meandering around Jackson Wednesday night around 11pm and saw NS power heading west out of the yard. Thinking this was maybe the road train to Kzoo (B33?) I parked over by the station to see what all they had. 6 engines, and 14 cars. Now I'm not hardcore enough to tell modern engines apart but...

B22 left Jackson today at about 2:30pm, haven't heard if they are at Albion atm but I would assume they would arrive within an hour of departing Jackson B34 to BC is calling in to leave right now, at 3:30pm, due to take the siding at albion to pass B22 working the Andersons. So B22 is ether at Albio...

Re: ADBF Question

So his hostile take over attempt of the SMRS was to revitalize the line and ship North. Who was he hoping to ship too. I wouldn't say it was to ship north. I believe their ultimate goal was establishing a connection with NS so they wouldn't have to push loaded cars up the grade on the connector in ...

Re: SMRS is showing results

Nice job on the crossing! Don't remember what shape it was in when I rode the SMRS two weekends ago, but I'm sure it's in better shape after your TLC. Some pretty hefty pot holes were developing between the rails. New ties, guard rails added, and new pavement. Additionally there was a switch just s...

Re: SMRS is showing results

I'd guess that Allison built the transmission for it? Almost certainly non-production item, and with them being sold at least once since GM ownership, the sort of "legacy" information (drawings, parts lists etc.) may not exist any more. On the other hand, the prime mover (if I remember right) is a ...

Re: SMRS is showing results

We travel at an average 8mph per our insurance policy. We will probably never operate over 10-15mph as the scenery goes by too fast otherwise. One of the big draws of our trips is the view and the open air car, so we want people to be able to enjoy it. In the future we may make use of higher speeds ...

Re: SMRS is showing results

On the north side of NS, there is a 1-200ish foot gap, with Raisin Center Hwy (not Sand Creek) cutting in between. On the other side rail comes up to within 50' or so. We have talked to GM about the GMDH3, other than basic builder info they didn't have much to offer. With the GMDH-1s, there were 4 b...

Re: SMRS is showing results

Curious if any mechanical work has been explored on the GMDH-3 since repainting. I understand being a one off has its challenges for this neat little unit. Earlier this year we had an outside mechanic come to look it over. At this time it is not feasible to get it operating reliability. The issue i...

Good points, being transparent and open is key. I'm glad I could help clear things up somewhat for you. If there are any projects that peak your interest, I'd be happy to provide details as I'm able to. Likely the biggest topic is the RS-1. Our volunteer numbers are on a slow increase, which has all...
