Re: Packard Plant Rail Service
Um...yeah. These "buyers" are actually living in another galaxy somewhere. Their nonsensical "statement" from yesterday includes talk of "prophecy," Albert Einstein and "Hernando Deesoto" [sic]. Interesting reading: http://www.freep.com/assets/freep/pdf/C42144731029.PDF If that $6 million check arri...

Re: Frankfort, MI Baggage car?
Don't know the disposition, but I can confirm that that baggage car is no longer at its old location. It used to be part of the Smokestack junk shop, just northwest of the corner of M-22 and M-115. The Smokestack closed a few years ago (a real bummer, since it was like one of my favorite secondhand ...

Re: CSX on foreign rails (Lansing)
Ah...thanks for the explanation. I've certainly seen BNSF (and UP) power on the GTW thru town before...but never CSX. Guess it's not as unusual as it seemed...

CSX on foreign rails (Lansing)
Was at Lansing's Potter Park with the kids yesterday (Sunday) afternoon and happened to see eastbound on the old GTW. Funny thing was...it was being pulled by a single CSX unit...not something I've seen before. Anyone know what the deal is? Unfortunately, I wasn't able to catch the number of the uni...

Re: NS Michigan Line STB Filing
Interesting that the purchase apparently now extends into Townline. I had been under the impression that NS was going to hold onto ownership of the track out to Ypsi.

LSJ is now saying there's a boxcar on its side...apparently on the CSX main, NOT the belt line.

Lansing Derailment
The Lansing State Journal is reporting a derailed car on MLK near Grand River: http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20111201/NEWS01/312010007/Train-derails-north-Lansing?odyssey=mod|breaking|text|FRONTPAGE Description seems to suggest this is on the JAIL-operated belt line (not CSX, which is f...

Re: MDOT & NS Reach $140 Million Deal
More daydreaming... Wonder if the new owners (us!) might be more amenable to steam-powered excursion trains than NS? After all, the state is (I believe) still the actual owner of the old AA main north of Osmer...with GLC as operator. Would government control of the MC main ease concerns about liabil...

MDOT & NS Reach $140 Million Deal
Here's the press release: http://michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9620-263585--,00.html MDOT buys ex-Michigan Central main from K-Zoo to Ypsi for $140 million & agrees to install 2nd track east of Ypsi(!). Has anyone heard what is to become of the Lansing and Grand Rapids branches in this deal? IIRC, ...

It hasn't gotten any coverage yet, but I see Gov. Snyder's proposed budget does include $11.6 million for passenger rail in Michigan (see page 162): http://michigan.gov/documents/budget/4_345976_7.pdf If my reading of last year's transportation approps bill ( http://www.legislature.mi.gov/documents/...

Re: new club in Lansing
I'm interested. Growing up, my old man and I used to go to Ann Arbor Train & Trolley Watchers meetings. Now that my 3-year old son is head-over-heels in love with trains, It would be great to have a similar sort of group here that could meet monthly or so and where we could watch slides, videos, etc...

Re: Lansing's Old Town railroad spur to be reactivated
Wow! Awesome pictures in this thread...especially the snowplow and MA tower. I live a few blocks from Old Town and have always wondered what that structure was. Very nice to hear we're going to be getting some traffic on that old line again!

My vote is still for Trowbridge in East Lansing...as viewed from the playground in back of Spartan Village Apartments (which is real nice if you have little ones). Just don't forget your step ladder and pruning shears so you can see over the fence. Either that or climb up one of the old weeping will...

Re: CN Radio Freq's in Lansing
Thanks, Fred. That makes me feel better. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my scanner. When I was about 12 or 13 I lived near the Conrail main in Ann Arbor. It seemed like there used to be a lot more chatter then...especially considering there wasn't much besides Amtrak. You're...

CN Radio Freq's in Lansing
Hi all-- Just getting back into railfanning after a long hiatus (thank my 2-year old twins for that). To help us chase trains around our home here in downtown Lansing, I just picked up a used scanner today. I'm hearing some chatter from CSX, but so far not a peep from CN. I have 160.590, 160.530, an...
