Conrail GP40-2 #3066Conrail GP40-2s #3066 and #3065 lead two tankcars northbound as symbol B-56, the Wayland Local. They are shown hitting the diamonds with the former Michigan Central mainline near BO Tower on the former PRR. B-56 is a new Kalamazoo-based local job serving the Wayland area. The train comes out of Botsford Yard and goes west to BO Tower, then around the wye and southbound to the Gibson switch. At Gibson, they throw the switch and then reverse direction to go north on the Kalamazoo Branch. Tankcars are the normal fare on this job. March, 2007.GP30M4216Apr 23, 2007

NS D8-32B #3547Sequentially numbered D8-32B's lead northbound manifest 36E across the Michigan Central mainline near BO Tower, at the site of the old Tower 1 in Kalamazoo. D8-32B locomotives have been common power on the runs from Grand Rapids to Elkhart and back since summer 2006. 36E commonly runs through Kalamazoo during the mid to late morning hours, so it's a great daylight freight to see. Mondays, the train is twice as long as normal, and often counts to over 80 cars. GP30M4216Apr 23, 2007

Amtrak 353 with NS B-17 and B-0-KA full compliment of trains completes this scene at the west end of Kalamazoo's Botsford Yard. On track 1 is a six car Amtrak train 353, waiting at the West Botsford mast signal for a clear route through BO into the Kalamazoo Station. On yard track 2, Conrail GP40-2 #3062 and NS #3069 are waiting to depart with local job B-17. On the right on yard track 4 is Conrail GP40-2 #3066, with local job B-0-K in tow for the south side of town. Out of view behind B-0-K is the Wayland Local, B-56, also waiting to leave the yard. CN GP9R #4618CN painted GP9R #4618 leads local job CN921, the Kalamazoo Switch Run, past the old crossbucks at the Division St. crossing in Kalamazoo, on the NS Upjohn Industrial. They had just picked up the Golden West Service boxcar from Arvco Containers, and are moving south to drop off the Railbox boxcar at LC Howard. On the rear is their caboose, GTW Wide Vision #79054. Conrail GP40-2 #3062Conrail (NS) GP40-2 #3062 leads extra train W9J over the switches at Gibson, south of BO Tower in Kalamazoo, MI. W9J was a priority freight of 35 hot boxcars from Lansing, MI to Elkhart this afternoon. Fresh snow and sunshine highlight the colorful consist. Art Train Caboose ARTX 0005The Art Train, a traveling exhibit of artwork that operates around the country on America's rails, is based in Ann Arbor, MI on the former Michigan Central mainline. Heading out for another circle around the country, the first part of their journey is westbound on the tail end of manifest 39J. Their four passenger (exhibit) cars and wide vision caboose ARTX 0005 are shown at Kalamazoo near the 14 14 signal, heading for Elkhart and beyond. Morning light and fresh snow highlight this scene. Conrail GP40-2 #3070Local job B-0-K swings south around the wye past BO Tower in Kalamazoo. Conrail painted GP40-2 #3070 has the honors of bringing this local job down to the south side and back today. The track switching to the left is the BO Secondary, the old LS&MS line which goes up to North Yard and Parchment. BO Tower is still open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and routes just over 20 trains a day through the interlocking. GP30M4216Mar 17, 2007

NS D9-40CW #8980Elephant style Dash-9s prepare for their assult of the ascenting hill out of Kalamazoo at the headend of manifest 39J, at the Vine Street crossing. They are passing the Vine St. semaphore, marking an approach-restricting indication for trains coming down the hill into town. It is the advance signal for the BO interlocking, and one of only about a half dozen semaphores left in service in Michigan, most of which serve the same purpose as this blade.
