BNSF SD40-2 #7843Adding a splash of color to the otherwise black and white lineup at the front of NS manifest 39J, BNSF #7843 in Heritage I colors is a former Burlington Northern locomotive which had the same number. The train is making a large pickup at Kalamazoo's Botsford Yard (note the many hoppers), and is seen here at the Harris Crossover near Harrison St. Their last pickup would require them to go as far as the Junkyard Switch south of BO. In all, well over 50 cars were picked up this January 28, 2006 morning.GP30M4216Feb 15, 2006

Amtrak NPCU #90218After suffering a hot bearing on the second axle, engineer's side, Amtrak F40 Cab #90218 was set out from train 350 on April 14, 2005, and the train was delayed until Amtrak 353 arrived to offer an eastbound engine. Overall, quite a headache! Number 90218 rested on Botsford Yard's North Pass for a few days before a repair crew was able to come out and replace the bearing. This photo is from April 15, 2005. Conrail GP40-2 #3066Paired Conrail GP40-2s, #3066 and #3065 accellerate hard as they haul an unusually long 16 car B-1-G west out of Botsford Yard past BO Tower. Twined Conrail locomotives are not uncommon on this Tuesday and Thursday run, as four of the six Kalamazoo based GP40-2s remain in Conrail Quality colors. BO Tower protects two sets of diamonds, two crossovers, and the switches at Gibson St., about a quarter mile south. The train is shown hitting the former LS&MS diamonds on a snowy December 22, 2005 afternoon. GP30M4216Jan 20, 2006

GTW GP9R #4621CN921, the Kalamazoo Switch Run, has set off their caboose as they back up to go down the Arvco Container siding to pick up three empty boxcars. Power on this snowy December afternoon is provided by GP9R #4621, with caboose #79046 assisting as usual. Beyond the caboose is the former Gibson diamonds (named after the street the train is crossing over), where the PRR (GR&I) and NYC (LS&MS) crossed in days gone by. GTW GP9R #4621Grand Trunk GP9R #4621 shoves slowly on the Kalamazoo Switch Run, CN921, as they back through Kalamazoo along former PRR trackage. Their destination this snowy December day is Arvco Containers, where they will pick up three boxcars. The leading end of the train is protected by GTW 79046, a Wide Vision caboose. GTW power is common on the Kalamazoo local, which is based out of the huge CN yard at Battle Creek, MI. They are shown crossing the Walnut St. crossing on December 19, 2005.GP30M4216Jan 20, 2006

GTW Wide Vision Caboose #79046This classic red Grand Trunk caboose is a common sight on the Kalamazoo Switch Run, local job CN921, due to the long backup move through town. This caboose is seen during a brief moment of sunshine crossing the Walnut St. crossing in Kalamazoo. Generally, the farthest this train will have to run is to Arvco Containers, which is in the very next block, though occassionally they will back all the way to the NS Botsford Yard to interchange cars. NS GP38-2s #5345 and #5535Visiting NS power idles at the east end of Botsford Yard. These two GP38-2s, one of NS heritage and the other a former Conrail unit, were sent from Elkhart for a few days as replacement power while some of the "usual" Botsford engines received inspections and servicing. Former Conrail GP40-2s #3065-#3070 are assigned to Botsford because they are equipped with ITCS gauges, to read the signals on Amtrak tracks west of town. Conrail GP40-2 #3065Highballing west along the former Michigan Central double track mainline, #3065 and a Conrail sister have a lengthy 15 car B1G in tow as they pass the campus of Western Michigan University. B1G can be anywhere from 3-20 cars in length, but ordinarily is between 5 and 12. This train will serve industries in Lawton and Dowagiac, but may also go as far as Niles. Amtrak P42DC #32Genesis #32, the last locomotive remaining in the Phase III paint until summer 2005, has traded in its earlier Amtrak colors for the modern scheme of the Acela "Wave" as it leads Amtrak train 351, the morning Wolverine, past BO Tower in Kalamazoo toward a stop at the Kalamazoo station. A swelled 7 car consist has enough room for holiday travelers on this day before Thanksgiving 2005.GP30M4216Jan 08, 2006

CSX CW40-8 #7800CSX CW40-8 #7800, a rare sight on lines around Kalamazoo, leads NS D9-40CW 9427 elephant style and 77 cars southward past Block Station Gibson. Gibson is the location of the branchoff of the Kalamazoo Secondary (toward Hughart in Grand Rapids), the BO Secondary toward BO Tower, and the Upjohn Secondary to Portage. Once upon a time, it was the site of the diamond of the LS&MS (NYC) line with the PRR (GR&I). The train is pictured at 9:35AM moving south toward Elkhart. December 2, 2005.GP30M4216Jan 08, 2006

NS train 39J at BO TowerNS #9636 shoves with a BNSF C44-9W, NREX SD50, and another NS D9-40CW back past BO Tower into Botsford Yard as they make their pickup as part of train 39J (Jackson-Elkhart). When the pickup from Kalamazoo in more than about 40 cars, they will frequently move straight on MC main #2 and then shove back into the yard rather then go around the wye at the interlocking and risk a derailment on the curve. Conrail SD60M #6794Conrail Quality SD60M #6794 leads NS 8-40C #8630 and Conrail Quality SD50 #5406 as they power up around the curve just south of BO Tower in Kalamazoo with manifest freight 39J. The train this day had 119 cars, including about 50 steel coil cars (from Holt) and 15 empty NS coal hoppers from Pfizer. Also included was the usual assortment of gondolas, boxcars, covered hoppers and tank cars. Conrail power can still be seen on the point and in consist on road trains over these former CR rails. Amtrak P42DC #30Genesis #30 is on the point of Amtrak train #350, the Wolverine, as they accellerate eastbound from Kalamazoo's Amtrak station. Note the lack of an Amtrak logo on the front of number 30. The 350/355 consist has lately been four cars, rather then the three of the previous three plus years. The wye track to the left here connects the MC mainline with the former LS&MS line to Elkhart, and is utilized today by local freights and road trains 38J and 39J.
