GLC GP35 #390Unit grain runs were in full swing in late fall of 2008 on the former Ann Arbor rails of Michigan. Here, former AA GP35s 390, 385 and 394 plus the two GMTX GP38-2s roll south approaching the Joy Road crossing at Osmer, MI with a lengthy loaded train. The conductor is on his way out of the cab to throw the switch at the north end of the Osmer siding, where the cars will be left for the Ann Arbor Railroad to pickup to continue the southbound journey. 10 cars of mixed freight were left for the GLC to take north this afternoon. Michigan Southern GP9 #908Michigan Southern GP9 #908 leads their local job west along the former NYC "Old Road" approaching the US-12 road crossing between Sturgis and White Pigeon, MI. As Pioneer took over operations, they replaced the MSO Alco fleet with a few geeps such as the 908. This job is returning from Sturgis. Only 413 miles to Buffalo! July 18, 2002.GP30M4216

Michigan Southern RS3M #7804Michigan Southern RS3M #7804 trundles along the former NYC "Old Road" near Bronson along a short stretch where the tracks are paralleled by US-12. They are returning from Coldwater with a cut of tankcars from local industries. This segment of the line is now unused and in very poor shape. MSO has cut back operations to Sturgis. This classic Alco went out of service on the MSO around 2004 and remained out of service at White Pigeon, MI until December 2011 when it and other Alco sisters were cut up for scrap. Grand Elk caboose #13Grand Elk's class N-11 transfer caboose, GDLK 13, rests on one of the former roundhouse leads at Kalamazoo's Botsford Yard. This caboose was built in October 1969 as Penn Central 18516, and retained that number through the big blue Conrail era. It was assigned to Grand Rapids, MI in the 1990s. When Grand Elk took over the Kalamazoo Secondary in spring 2009, they inherited this caboose, and painted it in their colors in 2010. July 10, 2010.GP30M4216

They are shoving one loaded tankcar for Abbot Labs and pulling a single loaded 63' hi-cube boxcar which will be spotted at International Paper. These are the two busiest customers on the line. Michigan Southern GP16 #1616PREX GP16 #1616 shoves back to spot a loaded 63' NS boxcar in the loading dock at International Paper in Sturgis. The tankcar immediately behind the locomotive was just picked up empty from Abbot Labs, to the north of International Paper. The empty four boxcars behind the engine were just pulled from the IP dock. The end car is still letter for Southern and says "Super Cushion Service" to the right of the door. March 7, 2011.GP30M4216

Michigan Southern GP16 #1616MSO GP16 #1616 heads west at White School Road with a train of seven cars to take to interchange at White Pigeon. Sturgis can be seen in the background. The Old Road was at one time the LS&MS' mainline from Elkhart to Toledo, before the Water Level Route was built below the state line. MSO operates about 13 miles of Old Road trackage. This journey will take them 12 miles from Sturgis back to White Pigeon. At White Pigeon Junction, they'll be interchanged to the Grand Elk, where they will first go to Kalamazoo before taking the road freight to Elkhart and heading out for another load. GLC GP35 #392A brief moment of sun catches the nose and a swirl of fresh snow as former Ann Arbor GP35's #392 and #391 lead a westbound road freight along highway M-36 in Lakeland. The train is 99 cars this day - all covered hoppers except a single loaded bulkhead flatcar with telephone poles. The rest of the train was likely empty - grain and sand hoppers going to mid-Michigan for another load. January 9, 2011.GP30M4216

GLC GP35 #392A pair of elephant style GP35s, turning 47 this year, show they've still got it as they drag a lengthy 99 car train westbound on the former Ann Arbor mainline at Lakeland, MI. Locomotives 392 and 391 wore several versions of the orange AA paint before giving way to TSBY yellow and blue, and now Great Lakes Central blue and white. They are shown paralleling highway M-36.
