Amtrak 90219.jpg
Amtrak NPCU #90219Shopped only a few months ago for some new Phase III colors, number 90219 may be the last paiece of Amtrak equipment to be painted into that scheme. Since then, two more NPCU cabs have been repainted (90221 and 90218), but in a variation of the Wave Phase V livery. Number 90219 is seen bringing up the rear of morning Amtrak train 351, the Wolverine, which is boarding passengers at the Kalamazoo Amtrak station. 5/10/06GP30M4216
BNSF 4614.jpg
BNSF CW44-9 #4614Adding some color to the otherwise black and white lashup on the headend, BNSF CW44-9 #4614 leads southbound train 39J out of the Yard Limit past Block Station Gibson. Note the replacement doors on the side of the 4614, still in primer paint. This is where the GR&I once crossed the LS&MS, but the diamond has been removed, leaving this current track arrangement. The track to the left is the line to Grand Rapids. To the right is the Upjohn Industrial. 39J had 127 cars, including 20 from Kzoo. 5/9/06.GP30M4216
NS5020 BO B-1-G.jpg
NS GP38-2 #5020Norfolk Southern high hood GP38-2 #5020 is on the rear end of local B-1-G as they roll south past BO Tower in Kalamazoo. After crossing the MC mainline and BO Tower, 5020 will be in the lead as the train, only 7 Thiele tankcars today, rounds the wye and swings back into Botsford Yard. High hoods are rare in Kalamazoo, so it was great to see this one on a local job. When going to North Yard, B-1-G is generally anywhere between 5-15 cars. April 10, 2006.GP30M4216

NS GP38-2 #5020Norfolk Southern high hood GP38-2 #5020 is on the rear end of local B-1-G as they roll south near BO Tower in Kalamazoo. When switching industries on the North Side, they run with a locomotive on each end, as part of their trip to or from the yard is a backup move. After crossing the MC mainline and BO Tower, 5020 will be in the lead as the train, only 7 Thiele tankcars today, and Conrail 3066 will be on the rear. High hoods are rare in Kalamazoo, so it was great to see this one on a local job. 4/10/06GP30M4216

Conrail GP40-2 #3070Fourteen cars worth of NS local B-1-G swing around the curve near Oliver St. and the campus of Western Michigan University eastbound on the Michigan Central mainline into town after being picked up in Lawton and Dowagiac. A pair of ITCS equipped GP40-2s are familiar power, today provided by #3070 and #3066. New signals 145.1 (WB) and 145.2 (EB) were cut over here replacing two other signals near this location on March 9, 2006. This photo was taken on April 25, 2006.GP30M4216
GTW4925.jpg
GTW GP38-2 #4925Back when Kilgore Yard was home to the KSR crew and locomotive, A GP9R or GP38-2 was based in Kalamazoo to run into town to switch industries, transfer cars to the NS, and pickup and setoff cars from Pavilion Jct, where the Kalamazoo Branch hits the mainline SE of Kalamazoo. This gray winter 2004 day finds GP38-2 #4925 as the resident locomotive at Kilgore.GP30M4216
NS9644 A.jpg
NS D9-40CW #9644With five other engines in tow, D9-40CW revs up to haul a long cut of cars out of Kalamazoo's Botsford Yard, over the Kalamazoo River bridge just east of Harrison St. 39J is the locomotive shuttle for engines which need to be inspected from Wayne, Lansing, Jackson, and Kalamazoo, and this extra power is often shut down and just along for the ride. The farthest two locomotives are Conrail painted B40-8 #4815 and GP38-2 #5346. February 17, 2006. GP30M4216
CR4815 A.jpg
Conrail B40-8 #4815Some of Conrail's B40-8s remain even in 2006 complete with large original Conrail lettering and Labor Management nose decal. One of these is number 4815, which holds its Conrail colors remarkably well. It is seen as one of six locomotives on NS train 39J this day, which will soon head south for Elkhart. It is seen here near the Harrison St. crossing in Kalamazoo as they make a lengthy pickup from Botsford Yard. February 17, 2006.GP30M4216

Amtrak 035 BO LS&MS.jpg
Amtrak P42DC #35 at BO TowerLooking south along the old LS&MS branchline to North Yard, we see Genesis #35 zip past BO tower with Amtrak train 364, the eastbound Blue Water. The southbound home signal on the branch is in the foreground. Trains use this branchline north of BO every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to switch North Yard and up to Parchment. South of the tower it is used daily by multiple trains going from Botsford Yard to the Southside, and by manifests 38J and 39J. 4/8/06GP30M4216

At the tower, they will turn east on the wye (picking up their CN track bulletin from the train order hoop) to head for Detroit on the old MC. Two other re-routed trains also came this way, NS206 and 20K. 4/17/06.GP30M4216

BO Tower-2.jpg
BO TowerBO Tower continues to guard the diamonds in downtown Kalamazoo, one of only four interlocking towers which remain in operation in Michigan. This tower governs the movements of about 20 trains a day on weekdays through the interlocking. It is located at the diamonds of the former Michigan Central mainline and the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern. Just a block away is the MC diamond with the former PRR, which today is also under the control of the BO tower operator. November 24, 2000 photo.GP30M4216

CR4807 B.jpg
Conrail B40-8 #4807Conrail painted B40-8 #4807 retains its original Conrail paint colors and Labor Management nose logo even in this year 2006 as it leads an HLCX SD45 rental north through Kalamazoo with train 36E. Grand Rapids bound, they are hauling over the Michigan Central Division diamonds near BO Tower. Many of the B40-8's on NS retain their Conrail colors, and it is always nice to see blue power on the road freights in Kalamazoo. March 15, 2006.GP30M4216
